As a mature mother of two teenage daughters, I have many years of experience with children both in and out of the classroom. I am certified in NJ to teach K-5 all subjects as well as 5-8 Math and 5-8 Science. I am also able to tutor high school students in Algebra I, Algebra II and SAT/ACT prep. My test prep involves not only practice questions and sample tests but test-taking and time-management strategies.
I am currently teaching on a part-time basis and especially enjoy working one-on-one with students. This lends itself to designing instruction suited to the individual needs and learning style of the student. I believe teaching is a creative art. No two students are exactly alike. A good teacher is one who can identify the specific needs and learning styles of her students and design a path for learning based upon those needs. As a tutor, my job is not to review classwork but to find new ways to re-teach and reinforce what was learned in school.
In addition to academic instruction, I am available for sewing, knitting, crochet, cross-stitch, and most other needlework instruction. Cheryl did a wonderful job working with my son for the SAT. Cheryl helped my son with time management, reading passages, and writing. The results were better than I, or my son, had expected! Cheryl was flexible with scheduling and she listened to our needs and focused on our requests. Based on our results I can only highly recommend Cheryl for her tutoring services. Thank you again Cheryl, we will keep you informed of our college plans!
She is very patient and extremely professional. She is never on her phone or looking at texts, etc. She always has a lesson plan and ideas, and is never just winging it. She can balance being a good teacher, and also understands that kids can get frustrated or lose interest.
Cheryl has helped my daughter so much with her math skills! We are very happy with her tutoring! Thanks Cheryl!
Thank you for your feedback. Your daughter is a very enthusiastic student, and I enjoy working with her. I look forward to tutoring her again in August in preparation for 5th grade.
Cheryl has been very patient and considerate with my son. She is mindful of his daily schedule, frustrations and tolerances while working with him. Her gentle personality has been a positive influence. She works very well with us setting up the lesson times, because sometimes it's challenging with our son's football schedule. We like that she is very dependable and knowledgeable.
I had my first lesson with Cheryl last week. I told her about my weak spots, particularly in math, and she helped me through step-by-step, starting with the basic blocks and then building up to more difficult word problems. Her method is effective; she breaks down topics and lets the student try to figure out the problem and out together the pieces to the final answer. Great tutor!
My son is making progress. He's confirmed that Cheryl's teaching strategies are helpful and he is now able to understand some of the work.
My daughter went from a c+ to a b+ and scored a b+ on her quarterly exam. This is an amazing improvement considering her test scores prior to hiring Cheryl were all below passing. We couldn't be happier with the results so far!!
Cheryl and I met and yes, it was a slow start. I was not 100% ready with my set up to effectively show Cheryl where I am in my class and what I actually need to focus on. Like any very good tutor, Cheryl worked with me and we got started. The session went well and I did learn some elements of Excel that I didn't know.
I'm happy that I took the first step and asked for help, and I'm also happy that Cheryl took the time and patience to work with me. I need tutoring in this subject and all it's components and I feel good to have Cheryl with me. Looking forward to our next session.
Cheryl is actually tutoring my niece for the SATs coming up in May. Being an educator and tutor myself for more than 35 years now, I agreed to do the search for her tutor and foot the bill once we found one. I was thorough and careful in the search because my niece has made it clear that she thinks a tutor is unnecessary and a waste of time and money; not an uncommon attitude among many high school students, but her PSAT scores suggest otherwise. So I knew we needed someone calm, determined and experienced and CHERYL S. totally fits the bill. In fact, my niece is a varsity athlete and her schedule is often unpredictable as games run over time or are cancelled and then rescheduled for another day and time and CHERYL S. has been very flexible in accommodating. In fact, the only reason I have rated the lessons as Good rather than Excellent is my niece's lack of prep and commitment not CHERYL'S.
Cheryl was awesome with my daughter. I only gave her 4 weeks to work with her twice a week before the SAT. She worked the full hour every time and was able to pinpoint my daughters weak spots as well as her strengths. Given the short time frame she knew to put emphasis on test taking strategies as well as working on problems.
I don't have my daughters results yet, but I do know that she walked in to the test less intimidated and feeling more confident because of Cheryl.
I wish I had found her for my three older children- but its never too late to learn.
Cheryl is very well organized. She is executing the strategy we initially agreed upon. She is successfully tailoring the sessions to meet my child's needs. I am very glad I found her. Excellent tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, have passed the Praxis Exam for Elementary Ed, and have my NJ teaching certificate of eligibility for K-5 Elementary Education. I am currently teaching part-time and especially enjoy working with students in the K-5 age group.
NJ Certification in Elementary Math (K-8). Degree in Elementary Education with Math, Science and Technology specialization. I believe that the use of manipulatives and real-life implementation of math principles improve retention and make learning more fun.
Studying for the Praxis exam (particularly the Elementary Ed Content Knowledge Exam) is all about test-taking strategies and time management. With the exception of Math and to some extent Science, it is difficult to prepare by studying content because the range of possible content is so broad.
I took and passed (the first time) Praxis Elementary Ed Content Knowledge (AKA Praxis II) with a score of 193 and received an ETS Certificate of Excellence for my score. I also passed Middle School Math Praxis with a score of 189, and Middle School Science with a score of 184. (Potential range of scores is 100 to 200 on each exam.)
It is extremely important to manage your time on these tests. It is also important to know how to narrow choices on multiple choice questions, using logic to reason out answers you are unsure of. These tools combined with the knowledge you already possess are key to passing the Praxis, and the best way to prepare is to hone these skills.
When I went back to school, my public speaking class was the most vital course I could have taken. I had a fantastic teacher of public speaking at Brookdale College. I was taught the art of extemporaneous speech. My success in that course was critical to my success as a teacher. Whatever your field, effective communication is vital. I hope more colleges make this a mandatory course regardless of curriculum. Everyone needs this skill. Together with MS Power Point skills, we can all be more effective speakers.
I started sewing at the age of 12, inspired by my older sister's Home Economics project. My first creation was a cotton dress that consisted of 5 pattern pieces. It was not something I could wear in public, but it sparked my interest. I made another dress using the same pattern, and learning from my initial mistakes, it was a little better. But I was hooked. I learned that detail and precision are everything when it comes to sewing. (Press the seams!) I progressed over the years and at this point have done it all. At one point I was making all of my business clothing - this included dresses, blouses, slacks, suits, coats. My favorite thing to do when I got my pay check was to go to the fabric store and see what new material had arrived. After I had children, I expanded into Halloween and class play costumes, stuffed toys, holiday decorations, drapes, duvet covers, pillow shams, and I have even reupholstered a chair or two. Then I discovered quilting...where sewing and art come together.
