Public Speaking

Public Speaking

My first speech to a large audience was as the featured Thanksgiving assembly speaker when I was in 11th grade. I loved it. I went on to teach for more than two decades -- one of the ultimate tests of effective public speaking -- as well as to win grants based on testimony before committees of judges and public agencies. I have delivered more than 50 training and/or sales presentations to audiences in several cities and states, and am considered highly effective. If you need to speak in front of a group, I would be glad to help you have fun, and develop your skills, so that you can do a great job and feel proud of your work.

Corporate Training

Grammar,

Grammar

Grammar can be fun! You can learn how and why sentences fit together correctly, and amaze yourself and your friends! We will focus on the most important grammatical concepts, and try to avoid those you may only see once on a test some day and that make far less difference to the quality of your speaking and writing.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

One of the hardest things for anyone -- even professional writers -- to do is to proofread their own writing. I can provide you techniques to help you become an "outside observer" of your own writing, as well as convenient ways of testing the clarity of your writing with a little help from your friends. Learn to share this fun skill with others and help yourself and them share your writing with more confidence and precision.

I have a lot to offer middle, high school, and beginning college students in the areas of study skills and academic planning/organization.

History

American History,

American History

From upper-elementary students through advanced graduate students, I have a long and successful track record of helping students dig into, and get the most out-of their History/Social Studies class work, test preparation, projects, etc. I hold New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts state certification as a teacher of English and Social Studies, and am a highly-rated History of American Education professor at Montclair State University. I hold my Bachelor of Arts degree from Brandeis University in liberal arts/sociology; my Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Social Studies Education from Brown University; and my Doctor of Arts in History and Curriculum from Carnegie Mellon University. As a certified and tenured social studies teacher, I taught for over 14 years in the public schools of Brookline, MA, Montgomery County, MD, and New York City, as well as in two highly-rated independent schools. I have developed history/social studies curriculum, trained teachers, and supervised and mentored teachers in social studies.
Government & Politics

Government & Politics

It's getting more complicated all the time, isn't it? Whether you're a middle school student engaged in your first serious study of the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, and Bill of Rights; or preparing for tests, papers, or projects on some aspect of U.S. History and Government; or struggling with a government or history course in college; I am working successfully across all those age ranges and grade levels to bring students up-to-speed, and beyond, in these sometimes-complex topics. Growing up in Washington, D.C. jump-started my passion for Government and Politics. As a high school student, I was selected to help "govern" Montgomery County, Maryland as a "county official" on Student-County Government Day. My 9th grade "Civics" teacher was spectacular -- James Schallmo, Silver Spring, MD. I went on to study sociology and history in college and graduate school, to teach civics and history in middle school, high school, and college, and I remain a "political junkie," read extensively in history and politics, and teach history and public policy at the college level.

Great language teacher!!!

Dr. Robert is a great language teacher. His strategy of teaching is very much research oriented along with the new changes in the education system which we observed during the preparation for PARCC. He motivates the students so much that students are ready to take challenges happily. Already I see the improvement in my child's reading habit and increasing the analytical skill while writing. It's been six months my child is getting help from him and ready for the more exciting and successful future lesson with him. His thoughtful and strategic approach of teaching is greatly helpful for not only getting good grades but learning the subject thoroughly.

Great Teacher

It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge. - Albert Einstein Mr. Robert did just that. He instilled that love of learning and reading in my son. My son(4th grader), used to read earlier but now he knows what is close reading and so he reads more of his level books. Thus, his writing is also improved. And that too in just 4 months. Mr. Robert is highly experienced, very patient, and a real genuine person. He knows how to make learning fun. I just wish we could continue with you more. Thank you so much for everything.

Great Tutor

My daughter is very happy to follow Robert. She enjoys the reading and writing that Robert gave her. She says that she loves to have this lesson every week. I like Robert's way of teaching writing. He started from reading a book, understanding the book through vocabulary, then writing. He is very patient and full of sense of humor. My daughter enjoys the class.
