About Dr. Robert

Are you ready to take the next step in mastering ACADEMIC READING and WRITING?

Whether you're a middle-schooler facing challenging new expectations, a high-schooler with needs ranging from catch-up to Advanced Placement, or a university student or working adult with a reading/writing/speaking project staring you down -- let's get after it, and see you through to success!

I have spent my life teaching -- middle school students, high school students, college students, and teachers. I have won awards for my student-centered, highly-effective teaching, which I do with both a welcoming manner and high expectations for what you can and will achieve. I have a background as a professional writer/journalist/editor, and have won awards for my work researching and writing about American history. I have also been a school principal. I AM READY TO HELP YOU GET WHERE YOU NEED TO GO IN YOUR STUDIES.

In addition to my customized study programs, I offer proven, effective test-preparation for:

* The NEW S.A.T.: EVIDENCE-BASED READING AND WRITING, and the optional ESSAY sections.
* ** Recommended**The A.C.T.: ENGLISH; READING; SCIENCE; and the optional ESSAY sections. (As many colleges accept the A.C.T as the S.A.T. -- in fact, the A.C.T. out-sold the S.A.T. last year, and I believe it is a fairer test -- so it's worth your consideration as an option.)

I also work with students who have Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to provide appropriate challenges and supplements to their schoolwork, and to work with parents to revise IEPs to align with the available data about your child's needs.

THIS IS THE TUTORING SERVICE TO CONTACT to help you TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR OWN STUDIES and make a difference in your academic career!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I first remember loving history in fourth grade in Maryland, when we had to learn about the state's founding families, its religious toleration act, and other fascinating features of its past. I loved American History in junior high, high school, and college; one of my college teachers was a very prominent scholar and author today, Professor David Hackett Fisher. I have gotten students from grades 7 through college excited about history, and eventually earned my Doctorate in History and Curriculum Development at Carnegie Mellon University. I would be delighted to help students see the "big picture" and the "interesting stuff" in American history and to prepare for success in this subject.

College Counseling

In my capacity as a high school teacher, I have guided dozens of students in their understanding of the college-selection process, including in what ways it's about career preparation, and in what ways it's about general learning and personal development. I was a university campus award-winning professor for my teaching in a large public university for 11 years. I now work with students, teachers, and the community on a variety of educational projects through a New York-based nonprofit.

English

Whether you're stuck on middle school fiction or nonfiction, high school classics, or analyzing characters in an essay, I have vast experience guiding students' love and mastery of English course requirements, and I would be glad to help you. I also specialize in journalism. Our first in-person conversation is always free.

Government & Politics

Growing up in Washington, D.C. jump-started my passion for Government and Politics. As a high school student, I was selected to help "govern" Montgomery County, Maryland as a "county official" on Student-County Government Day. My 9th grade "Civics" teacher was spectacular -- James Schallmo, Silver Spring, MD. I went on to study sociology and history in college and graduate school, to teach civics and history in middle school, high school, and college, and I remain a "political junkie." I would love to share my passion for our fascinating system of government with any students who would like to understand it better.

Grammar

Grammar can be fun! You can learn how and why sentences fit together correctly, and amaze yourself and your friends! We will focus on the most important grammatical concepts, and try to avoid those you may only see once on a test some day and that make far less difference to the quality of your speaking and writing.

Praxis

I have passed the following Praxis and New York State teacher licensing exams, with special distinctions noted:

PRAXIS: English Language, Literature and Composition; Social Studies Content Knowledge (ETS Recognition of Excellence); Communications Skills; General Knowledge; Principles of Teaching and Learning 7-12 (ETS Recognition of Excellence).
NYSTCE: Liberal Arts and Sciences; Secondary Assessment of Teaching Skills , Written;; English; Social Studies.

Proofreading

One of the hardest things for anyone -- even professional writers -- to do is to proofread their own writing. I can provide you techniques to help you become an "outside observer" of your own writing, as well as convenient ways of testing the clarity of your writing with a little help from your friends. Learn to share this fun skill with others and help yourself and them share your writing with more confidence and precision.

Public Speaking

My first speech to a large audience was as the featured Thanksgiving assembly speaker when I was in 11th grade. I loved it. I went on to teach for more than two decades -- one of the ultimate tests of effective public speaking -- as well as to win grants based on testimony before committees of judges and public agencies. I have delivered more than 50 training and/or sales presentations to audiences in several cities and states, and am considered highly effective. If you need to speak in front of a group, I would be glad to help you have fun, and develop your skills, so that you can do a great job and feel proud of your work.

SAT Reading

I have successfully taught over 3000 students from middle school through graduate school in writing and critical reading. My SAT preparation system combines use of print and online materials provided by the College Board with customized assessment and prescriptive teaching to support your individual needs.

SAT Writing

I have successfully taught writing and critical reading to over 3000 students from middle school through graduate school.

Social Studies

I hold my Bachelor of Arts degree from Brandeis University in liberal arts/sociology; my Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Social Studies Education from Brown University; and my Doctor of Arts in History and Curriculum from Carnegie Mellon University. As a certified and tenured social studies teacher, I taught for 7 years in the Brookline, Massachusetts public schools and for 2 years in the Montgomery County, Maryland public schools, grades 7-12. I have also taught as a provisional teacher for two years at grades 9-12 in the New York City public schools. I have developed history/social studies curriculum, trained teachers, and supervised and mentored teachers in social studies. My current social studies teaching certificates are from the states of New York and Massachusetts; previously I have been certified in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Maine.

Speech

I am a 30 year veteran English teacher at the middle, high school, college, and graduate levels. I have written and presented speeches, dramatic readings, and other theater pieces regularly during this time. I have coached dozens of students and young adults in writing and delivering speeches for work and for public presentations.

Study Skills

I am a 25+ year veteran of grades 4-12 -- and college undergraduate -- teaching, including extensive work in study skills instruction, beginning with an old "classic" -- the Harvard-Milton Study Skills Program produced as a collaboration between the Harvard Ed School and Milton Academy -- and continuing to innovative methods of helping students employ the requisite study skills/note-taking skills to engage in critical reading and writing in response to literature. I have a lot to offer middle, high school, and beginning college students in the areas of study skills and academic planning/organization.

Writing

I have taught writing from grades 4 through graduate school, published articles in major national newspapers and journals, and authored a book. I served as a university journal editor for 9 years. I have helped children learn to love and write poetry, middle-schoolers learn to research and write about topics worth studying, and high-schoolers to write at a high level for exam or college preparation. I also tutor adults in writing, including teachers and school administrators. I would be pleased to meet you, find out your interests, and help you find your voice and your skills in writing. Our first in-person conversation is always free.
