I have taught English at the High School level for 16 years. I have specialized in assisting students in their Junior year with preparing for the HSPA, upcoming PARCC and the SAT, or ACT college entrance exams. I also assist students in writing effective college application essays, and scholarship application essays. Moreover, I can help students with the literature and writing that is required in their English class.
I have tutored many students who are presently attending college. I work with students in a comfortable atmosphere and individually use methods that are most effective for the individual learning style of the student. My son is a 10th grader and very good at math and science, but has difficulty in writing. Debra, with rich experience in high school teaching, understands curriculum very well. She assessed my son’s language ability in general and designed a plan to build up his writing through vocabulary, literature reading, and writing exercises. She is very nice and patient. It has been two months and my son said he felt very helpful and learned a lot in the tutoring sessions.
Our son is very smart, and very good in math, but not as good in English. Debra is able to accurately assess the areas my son needs to improve in, and also knows what he has to do to improve. With tutoring from Debra he has learned invaluable test taking strategies that are helping him improve his test scores. Our goal is that our son improves his reading and writing skills as well, over time, with regular coaching.
We are pleased with our decision to employ Debra as the tutor. She is the second English tutor we have tried, and the one we have decided to stick with.
My son is in high school, he is good in math, but just not good at English, and he is in a school that seems very competitive. I am originally from China, just can not help on the English things.
I found Ms. Debra. She knows the high school text books so well, she not only helped my son to understand the book/subject, but also lift my son's interest in English. She even knows what is the most likely test area.
After only 2 lessons, we already see the grade improving. I know it takes time to really improve English, I just regret I did not found Ms. Debra earlier.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I bring my own SAT/ACT material to the lessons and use strategies that have been successful for the students I have already tutored. I have taken courses with professionals that have scored AP English exams, who have in turn revealed many strategies and key points scorers look for in scoring the SAT Essay.
