My name is Marlene and my motto is "Math is fun." You've heard that before and you may not agree but it's true. My goal is for my students to agree with this statement as well. We all learn differently and my focus is to present material in various ways to determine the best way for each student to master the material. Explanations are key and my approach includes detailed solutions where appropriate, that students can use as a guide to help learn the topic.

I have a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Rutgers University and have spent my professional career in the insurance industry employed as an actuary. If you are not familiar with actuaries, the professional designations require successful passing of a series of 10 exams. The first four exams included college-level math such as Calculus, Probability and Statistics, Numerical Analysis and Interest Theory. I have recently retired from the actuarial profession. I have taught classes in preparation for actuarial exams and have tutored students in math in many levels, including elementary and middle school math, high school math: Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus and Calculus, as well as College level Algebra, Statistics, Calculus and Linear Algebra. I love tutoring and seeing the smile on a student's face when they finally understand a topic with which they may have been struggling.

Algebra I, Algebra II and College Algebra
Algebra lays the foundation for all higher level math courses, both in high school and college. I have worked with both teens and young adults to help them master this important subject matter.

Geometry and Trigonometry
I am grouping these topics together because I see them slightly different than other math courses. Students who previously did well in math may suddenly be struggling. Conversely, students who always struggled with math may find Geometry and Trigonometry easier to understand. Geometry and Trigonometry are more visual than other math topics. Additionally working through proofs in Geometry requires the ability to think in steps and understanding why each step comes next in the process.

Pre-calculus, Calculus and Linear Algebra
These courses are a natural extension of algebra. I have successfully worked with students at both the high school and college levels in these courses.

SAT Math
SAT Math, in an of itself, is not that hard. It's based on Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II high school courses. What makes it difficult it the way in which the problems are presented. And the best way to be successful is to work through as many problems as possible. As an actuary, having attained the highest designation offered in the field, I understand test taking and will share test-taking strategies in addition to working through the material.

Math is unlike other subject. You can't just read it and take notes. It's a skill and is best mastered by practice. To me, this means working through as many problems as possible, and re-working them as many times as necessary until it becomes as natural as breathing.

I'd welcome the opportunity to speak with parents about their students' tutoring needs in math. Contact me so we can meet and see if I can help your student.

Great tutor

Marlene is a very busy tutor. She’s a pro in numbers. She can figure out just about anything given the chance. It pays to work around her busy schedule. Which is a testament to how good she is with other students. I’ve used her in my Stats and Finance class which I’m glad I did. It won’t be my last. She’s awesome & super nice! And is able to talk through a problem as she’s doing the work, so you can follow the steps in real time. Don’t pass on this one! She’s as advertised!

Knowledgeable and patient

Marlene helped my son understand concepts that he’s having issues with. I reached out to her 2x at the last minute and she managed to accommodate us...just recently we have last minute tutorial for an exam, my son got 94 (pre Algebra). Thank you Marlene for your help. 😊

Very helpful

We worked on preparing for the math section of the SAT. She was patient and offered good tips. She was helpful as we worked through problems and she was well prepared with practice math problems. The online format was good.

Excellent and kind tutor.

Marlene is by far the best tutor I have worked with. I found her sophomore year the night before a test when I had no idea what was going on in my class. Even though she is on the East Coast, she made room for a 2 hour slot until past 10PM PST (1AM Eastern!!) to help me with a few hours notice. Later that school year, she helped me with many more concepts in Honors Precalc, and I felt she explained the concepts much better than my math teacher, with a ton of care and organization in how she introduced and explained concepts. Now that I am in AP Calc, she is helping me with more concepts I don't understand and she's as amazing of a tutor as I remembered. I actually look forward to and enjoy my 1-hour tutoring sessions, and the same cannot be said for my actual Calculus class. :) You can tell how much Marlene loves math and teaching. She is funny, caring, dedicated, and really feels like a member of your team when you're learning math. I am so grateful I found Marlene, and I look forward to continuing to work with her.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

Marlene taught me a lot, and I'm very thankful and appreciative of the knowledge she has helped me attain. Statistics is extremely hard, and she's already helped me so much. I'll be continuing to learn from her as much as I need, and I recommend you do the same.

Knowledgeable

Marlene was a great help. She knows her stuff. I would've never passed my pre-calc class without her. With math a hour can fly by in an blink of an eye. Marlene makes the most of each hour. She understands that apart from learning the material your still being graded so she tries to get you through the material and then taking you back to deeply explain. For me that was key because I'd be broke if it we're done any other way. This semester I went from a 54%, to a 72%. Thanks Marlene, I really appreciate it. I can exhale now!

Awesome tutor

Marlene was awesome! She was very nice and funny! She make me feel comfortable to ask questions and she answered them well. I came to her in desperation before my test and not knowing much. I feel way more confident now. She really is great and knows her stuff and will help you know it, too! Overall, great tutor!

Great tutor!

I had tried to take the Praxis Core: Mathematics exam three times without success prior to finding Marlene. We scheduled a few different meetings leading up to this last test and thanks to all of her help, tips, patience and knowledge I was finally able to pass! She was a huge help, very flexible with her schedule and I would not have been successful without help! If I ever need any math tutoring again, I would definitely reach out to Marlene and recommend her to family and friends!
