My name is Marlene and my motto is "Math is fun." You've heard that before and you may not agree but it's true. My goal is for my students to agree with this statement as well. We all learn differently and my focus is to present material in various ways to determine the best way for each student to master the material. Explanations are key and my approach includes detailed solutions where appropriate, that students can use as a guide to help learn the topic.

I have a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Rutgers University and have spent my professional career in the insurance industry employed as an actuary. If you are not familiar with actuaries, the professional designations require successful passing of a series of 10 exams. The first four exams included college-level math such as Calculus, Probability and Statistics, Numerical Analysis and Interest Theory. I have recently retired from the actuarial profession. I have taught classes in preparation for actuarial exams and have tutored students in math in many levels, including elementary and middle school math, high school math: Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus and Calculus, as well as College level Algebra, Statistics, Calculus and Linear Algebra. I love tutoring and seeing the smile on a student's face when they finally understand a topic with which they may have been struggling.

Algebra I, Algebra II and College Algebra
Algebra lays the foundation for all higher level math courses, both in high school and college. I have worked with both teens and young adults to help them master this important subject matter.

Geometry and Trigonometry
I am grouping these topics together because I see them slightly different than other math courses. Students who previously did well in math may suddenly be struggling. Conversely, students who always struggled with math may find Geometry and Trigonometry easier to understand. Geometry and Trigonometry are more visual than other math topics. Additionally working through proofs in Geom

I have recently tutored students for the math portion of Praxis. With my experience in tutoring other elementary, middle school and high school math subjects, I can work with Praxis students to break down concepts in very simple, easy-to-understand terms for students who have not had a math course in a while. I have worked with students who have failed the Praxis (math) numerous times and have passed after working with me.

To the rescue

My daughter has been working with Marlene for pre-calculus, and she has been really helpful to her. Marlene is also always ready to make time to help, even on her busiest days. She came to my daughter’s rescue the other night when she was panicking about her Accounting 1 test and it was too late to find an accounting tutor. Although Marlene doesn’t tutor accounting, she knew enough about Accounting 1 to help my daughter with a few concepts and she ended passing the test. Thanks Marlene!

Marlene is the best math tutor you could ask for. All math-phobes listen-up!

Marlene was the best math tutor I could have hoped for. I've been out of school for 40 years and needed to pass the math Praxis. Very difficult test. Marlene understood my challenges and helped me to understand and master the math for this test in a way I finally understood. Her method is understanding, patient and very very efficient. She finds a way to help you understand that is appropriate to your learning style. If you are a math-phobe like me, or haven't been in school for a while, this is a sure bet.

Very knowledgeable and relatable.

Marlene is continuing to improve my understanding of calculus and statistics. It has been very helpful to supplement on-line school classes. Her explanations have been very good and she challenges me to not give up when I have trouble.

Valuable Instruction and Assistance, Patient, and accommodating

Was able to help with both specific questions that I had, and was able to show me the overall process on how to complete certain statistical problems. Marlene was very helpful, patient, and also accommodating to any other issues or questions that popped up. Lastly, I was doing this all manually, and she explained the value of using a statistics calculator in the future! Thank you, Marlene

Stats Tutor

Marlene was patient and friendly. She demonstrated each question with a diagram as well as a verbal explanation. She made me feel comfortable enough to ask any question regardless of its difficulty, or simplicity. I can't wait to use her again!

Very knowledgeable and made it far easier to understand

I am no math major nor do I feel comfortable with formulas. She helped me see the why in what I am doing versus just doing it to get an answer/number! Thank you
