My name is Marlene and my motto is "Math is fun." You've heard that before and you may not agree but it's true. My goal is for my students to agree with this statement as well. We all learn differently and my focus is to present material in various ways to determine the best way for each student to master the material. Explanations are key and my approach includes detailed solutions where appropriate, that students can use as a guide to help learn the topic.

I have a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Rutgers University and have spent my professional career in the insurance industry employed as an actuary. If you are not familiar with actuaries, the professional designations require successful passing of a series of 10 exams. The first four exams included college-level math such as Calculus, Probability and Statistics, Numerical Analysis and Interest Theory. I have recently retired from the actuarial profession. I have taught classes in preparation for actuarial exams and have tutored students in math in many levels, including elementary and middle school math, high school math: Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus and Calculus, as well as College level Algebra, Statistics, Calculus and Linear Algebra. I love tutoring and seeing the smile on a student's face when they finally understand a topic with which they may have been struggling.

Algebra I, Algebra II and College Algebra
Algebra lays the foundation for all higher level math courses, both in high school and college. I have worked with both teens and young adults to help them master this important subject matter.

Geometry and Trigonometry
I am grouping these topics together because I see them slightly different than other math courses. Students who previously did well in math may suddenly be struggling. Conversely, students who always struggled with math may find Geometry and Trigonometry easier to understand. Geometry and Trigonometry are more visual than other math topics. Additionally working through proofs in Geom

Explains in an uncomplicated way

I had a test tomorrow and knew almost nothing about it, but after an hour an a half with Marlene I am more confident about the materials and connected the subject matter to real world applications.

Knowledgeable, helpful and dynamic

I decided to take statistics because I wanted to gain acceptance into a masters program and hadn't take a math class since my undergrad years. Marlene navigated me through a variety of statistical concepts. My experience in higher level math was weak before taking statistics, but Marlene stepped up to the challenge by assisting me. She is extremely patient, knowledgable and loves questions. I highly recommend her tutoring techniques to anyone.

Knowledgeable, patient, understanding, and kind

Marlene helped me understand the problems that I had with my quadratics and radical expressions homework. She explained it in the best way possible and made me feel comfortable during our session. She was very patient. After, I utilized the notes we had taken during out session and I went back online to do my homework and I got so many of the questions correct. I was able to comprehend the concept of the problems and I knew what I was doing. I highly recommend scheduling a session or more with her. You will see a much improvement and positive results possibly even after your first session!!! Thank you again Marlene!!

Amazing math skill and extremely patient

Marlene helped me study for the Math Praxis (5161) test. I graduated with a math degree 6 years ago and was very out of practice. I had forgotten basically everything I needed to know for this test. Marlene is extremely patient and helped me review concepts, take practice tests, and review practice test answers. I am astonished by her math knowledge. She can look at any math problem and teach it to you in an easy and helpful way. I highly recommend her for anyone studying for the Math praxis or anyone who needs help in any area of math. I passed my test today and could not have done it without her help!!
