About Valerie

About Me and My Goals:

Hello and welcome to my tutor profile! My name is Valerie, and I am seeking any and all opportunities to enhance the educational experience of those engaged in the pursuit of knowledge. I recently completed Drexel University's undergraduate mechanical engineering program, graduating magna cum laude in June of 2012. Lifelong learning is a passion of mine, and I possess an affinity for comprehension of scientific theories and principles as well as inspiring others to discover the same within themselves. In the instance that I witness a student achieve his or her academic goals with my help, I gain personal fulfillment.

As a recent graduate with engineering industry experience, I am equipped with up-to-date information as well as the ability to place emphasis on elements crucial to success in the professional world. Moreover, my natural curiosity has manifested itself in the 207 credits with which I graduated, several of which were earned by taking courses unrelated to my major.

My Prior Tutoring Experience:

My formal tutoring experience includes one semester during which I was compensated by the community college I attended for arranging one-on-one sessions with peers to provide my assistance with calculus, physics, or chemistry studies. More recently, over the three-year course of pursuing my bachelor’s degree at Drexel University, I informally assisted various classmates in succeeding in courses within the undergraduate mechanical engineering program; my help took the form of walking peers through solutions to homework problems, leading them to useful examples, cooperative problem solving, as well as acting as a study partner.

My Tutoring Philosophy and Method:

I believe that learning should be exciting and empowering. It is my aspiration to make convoluted math and science subject matter less phobia-inducing for and more accessible to those who desire to undertake such studies but currently lack the confidence to do so. Resourcefulness is essential in accomplishing this, in terms of my ability to make use of all available tools, visual demonstrations (e.g., step-by-step illustration of a calculation), analogies, and real-world applications to drive home key concepts. Therefore, in order to utilize resources to the fullest extent and arrive prepared to hit the ground running, I prefer to assess a student’s needs and academic areas of concern prior to the first tutoring session. I have observed the attempts of many to learn to solve a problem by rote, frequently erroneously, and I understand the importance of instead fully comprehending its internal mechanism before arriving at a solution.

I am able and available to provide tutoring services via one or a combination of the following channels, as best fits the student's individual needs and goals:
- Online, using WyzAnt's whiteboard (preferred)
- In-person session in a public location
- Custom-designed electronic lesson (e.g., material compiled as a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, video instruction) delivered to student via e-mail
