University of Pennsylvania (Economics)
***My schedule is currently filled through the end of the school year, but I would be happy to accommodate summer students beginning July 1st!***
Hello! My name is Kate, and I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2011 with a degree in Economics. I have four years of experience teaching SAT classes, and eight years of experience tutoring one-on-one in all academic subjects. To date I have taught or tutored more than 170 students, from first graders all the way to college graduates, and I still enjoy every minute of it. (I've heard my students do too!)
One of my most important qualities as an SAT tutor is that I tested in the 99th percentile on all three sections of the test, which enables me to truly guide students on the skills needed for the entire exam. Wherever your challenges are, I can help build your abilities and confidence to reach your full potential!
I am available for individual or group tutoring, or even full classes if the group is large enough. Hourly rate of $80/hr for up to 5 students, with a slight increase for larger groups. If you have any questions please feel free to ask! ***My schedule is currently filled through the end of the school year, but I would be happy to accommodate summer students beginning July 1st!***

Kate is a true professional who is very committed to her tutoring! We took advantage of group tutoring sessions that were very helpful, especially prior to taking the SAT for the first time. Then, Kate provided focused tutoring based on the test results. We highly recommend Kate for SAT tutoring and imagine Kate would be excellent in any content area tutoring provided. Thank you, Kate!
Kate is very efficient and great at clarifying difficult subject topics! She is making my online class much easier to take.
Kate is very kind and patient. She is creative and has a wonderful understanding of children and the way they learn.
Kate utilizes many interesting tools to help the children grasp their lessons. She shows the alternative ways to work through trouble areas. The children respond to her very well and have a great affinity for her.
Rian learned more in one hour with Kate than she did in her entire SAT PREP class! Kate is very knowledgeable about her subject and nothing is lost in translating that information to my daughter. Rian is very comfortable in the atmosphere that Kate creates. So very grateful for her help. We would highly recommend Kate to tutor your child as well! A sincere "Thank You" to Kate & WyzAnt.
Kate did a wonderful job in making my daughter feel comfortable and motivated. She looks forward to working with her again.
Kate prepared my son for SAT. Though he had a pretty good score to begin with, she was able to evaluate him and help him in the right areas in a very short period of time. She helped him to score very close to a perfect score. She taught SAT Reading, SAT Math and SAT Writing. She is an excellent teacher and very pleasant person. I consider myself lucky to find her and hire her.
Kate has worked with both my high school kids, one for SAT and the other for writing. She has been very helpful with the writing as her grades went to A's. We are waiting for SAT results, but are very hopeful as the practice test went up 220 points.
Kate did a terrific job with tutoring my daughter and a few of her friends during the summer for the SATs. She accommodated having both group and individual sessions and was able to help each kid with areas that they needed help. She was very responsive on email and on-time. It gave my daughter much more confidence going into the test and Kate was very knowledgeable on the subjects.
Kate has a great personality and easily and quickly connected with my 16 year old son. She was nonthreatening and helped him feel good about himself and his skills. She was positive and gave him confidence that he can easily fill in the knowledge gaps. I couldn't be happier with the interaction and progress in their first session!!
Kate continues to engage him in a very positive way. He feels like he is really improving in his skills and is happy he is working with Kate - which is a huge complement from a 16 year old boy who would rather be playing x-box. His positive attitude is a testament to Kate's skills and abilities!
First, I am the parent of the student. Second, I chose Kate because of the way she presented her description of her abilities on the WyzAnt website. She followed up quickly and asked what, if anything should she be aware of about my daughter's study/learning abilities. Kate was prompt and accommodating with her time for our daughter. Third we contacted her to assist our daughter with her SAT test.
Our daughter is an Honors and advanced class student, yet didn't do as well as we had expected on her SAT's; her score didn't reflect her ability. I can't say whether Kate's tutoring helped yet because my daughter hasn't retaken her SAT. I will update this in a couple of months if I can. Kate's style and concerns are what impressed me. I contacted her to help our daughter with the critical reading / reading comprehension portion of the SAT, though I didn't think my daughter did as well as she could have in the Math portion of the SAT either. We didn't know what the problem was. Kate took to heart that our daughter suffered from ADHD when she was younger. While it doesn't go away, it does require coping skills. My daughter really appreciated Kate's patience, and purposeful repetition with her weaknesses. She also gave my daughter homework. We thought that was great too because it enabled Kate to see and understand the areas where and why my daughter was messing up and rectify. Kate also DID help her with her Math! Kate was able to hone in on my daughters problem and create a strategy that gave my daughter renewed confidence to retake her SAT and expect a better outcome. My daughter and I whole-heartedly recommend Kate.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra 1 is the foundation of all higher math subjects, so a thorough understanding of its concepts is crucial to successful math experiences in the future. Some students need a more creative, individualized approach to truly "get it" when it comes to algebra. Don't let a little trouble in Algebra 1 turn into big trouble later in high school - it's easy to fix! With a little extra time and attention, every student can feel confident about his or her math abilities.
The hallmark of my tutoring style for children from K-6th is patience and enthusiasm. Learning anything can be fun for a child if someone is there to guide him or her in the right way! And if they are having fun, they will most definitely be learning too. I've tutored science, math, vocabulary, and reading for children in the Big Brother/Big Sister program at my high school, and so far there isn't an academic issue that we haven't been able to solve with a combination of creativity, magic markers, Lucky Charms, and food coloring. Find out how!
"English" is perhaps the broadest school subject. It encompasses writing, reading, grammar, spelling, critical thinking, literature, analysis, authors, and the list goes on. Many students feel confident in some areas, while lacking experience in others. Spending a little extra time with an English tutor can help fill in the gaps that don't get addressed in every classroom.
I love grammar! ...but I know I'm one of the few. I had an incredible English teacher in 8th grade who taught me everything I know about semi-colons, parallel structure, pronoun shifts, run-ons, comma splices, and a few even more obscure rules of writing. Not everyone has a great English teacher, but just because you don't know the rules doesn't mean they don't exist. Everything from college applications to term papers to timed essays is also judged by the quality of writing you present - grammar counts. It really only comes down to about 16 or so rules to know, so learn them! Invest in a skill that will remain impressive and useful for every piece of writing in your future.
The piano is an instrument that is close to my heart, and I love to share it with others. As a child I took 15 years of piano lessons (ages 3 to 18) and as an adult I have directed and accompanied musical ensembles on the piano for five years. This also has included teaching choir members about music theory and how to properly read sheet music, and I would love to help you learn these skills as well! I am trained in classical techniques as well as sight reading and improvisation. I am qualified to teach children and adults, offering instruction in both piano skills and music theory.
Trouble mixing letters in your math? Spend a little extra time practicing those x's and y's, and you'll breeze through your Algebra 1 next semester. Don't let a little trouble become big trouble...catch it early to get back on track with your math skills and development.
Proofreading is a service I provide specifically for long-term projects like term papers and college applications. However, I won't just take your paper and return it to you the next day with all corrections and no explanation. I want to make sure that you learn the reasoning behind the corrections, so next time you won't need me!
Whether you're trying to go from 350 to 500 or 750 to 800, everyone can benefit from extra help on SAT Math. Even if you're an all-star on your math tests, learning how to piece together your knowledge to solve an SAT word problem is tough. Make it easy! Learning the tricks of the test will save you hours of studying, and will raise your score much more than just drilling alone.
Flashcards are old news. (Not to mention mind-numbingly boring!) I won't give away any secrets here, but vocabulary is easy if someone teaches you the right way. Beef up your SAT word list in a way that helps you actually remember it when the test comes around. And those reading sections? You can be great at them every time, on every passage - it just takes a little patience and a lot of practice. Find out how!

But don't worry, we can work on that too!
