About Rebecca

Do you need help with your college admission's essay? Are you looking to develop your arguments for a persuasive opinion piece? Are you an ESL student struggling with English grammar or writing conventions? Need help with your public speaking? I can help with all of that and more...

As an undergraduate college student I underwent a semester's worth of training in tutoring pedagogy and practice, with a focus on how to tutor ESL students and others in a culturally inclusive manner, before going on to working at the college's writing and public speaking center. I worked hard to teach students to develop clear and persuasive arguments and a strong personal voice.

Fast forward to 2016, I have recently finished graduate school and now I'm looking to return to tutoring. I am a talented writer with extensive experience in the social sciences and the health fields (my undergraduate degree was in political science and my graduate degree was in public health (with a social science focus). I am able to help with a variety of different kinds of writing, from creative and personal essays, to scientific writing, to research papers.

I am bilingual in Spanish and I have worked abroad (in Spain and Ecuador) to help Spanish speakers to improve their English grammar, vocabulary and writing skills. I am also available to help English speakers with basic Spanish. Finally, I am highly knowledgeable in American government and politics, and American and World History, and could be available to assist in those areas.

I am patient, with flexible hours, and available to help with a variety of different kinds of writing. My goal is to provide students with the tools to help them develop their own, clear voices on the page.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

As a writing tutor in college, part of my training (and later, my work) involved how to be an effective public speaking tutor. (Our writing center was actually called a "Speaking, Arguing and Writing Center" and we learned pedagogy that could apply to both speaking and writing.) As a tutor, I practiced various aspects of public speaking with students, including how to develop a speech with a clear, effective message and how to develop good body language.

Patient and clearly knowledgeable with writing techniques

My daughter had her first session with Rebecca today. My daughter was unable to begin her SAT essay due to a writing block and she was unclear on the essay theme. Rebecca patiently focused on easing anxiety and encouraging my daughter to slowly and clearly put her thoughts on paper. My daughter will definitely meet with Rebecca again after her rough draft and outline is completed. When I asked my
