About Siu

Greetings,

My name is Ms. Siu L. and I have been working with students in the Northern NJ area for the past few years. Previously, I lived in NYC and worked with students from all 5 boroughs. I've had the pleasure of impacting a range of children's lives, including a variety of ages, English fluency, family background, home language, interest in math, and grade point averages. In order to teach in NYC and NJ, I have been fingerprinted with a clean background check.

My favorite subjects to teach are high school math and SAT prep. I also offer group workshops for the redesigned SAT.

I work with students to review challenging concepts, practice skills, engage in critical thinking, and to prepare them to enjoy and excel in college. I take into consideration students' time commitments and extra-curricular activities.

Classes take place in my dining room, equipped with school supplies, a photocopier, and the innovative use of a large tv as a whiteboard. I keep this space clean, quiet, comfortable, and free from distractions, so that the student can focus on our studies together. I review copies of students' quizzes and tests, so that I can assess their needs and strengths in order to prepare my lesson ahead of our session. And always, I keep the parents in the loop and answer emails or phone calls within 24 hours.

I look forward to speaking with you and learning how we can work together to empower your child!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I have tutored students in Algebra II Level 3 College Prep, Level 4 Honors, and Level 5 Advanced Honors in the South Orange-Maplewood School District.

SAT Math

We can work together so your child can confidently answer Math questions including grid-ins, Algebra, and Geometry.

I have experience tutoring in SAT Math through test taking strategies and more importantly the Algebra I and Algebra II course material that is on the test.

I taught at a leading test preparation company for several years. My students started with subject scores ranging from the 400s to 600s. Most students gained 50-70 points after participating in class and completing their homework.

SAT Reading

When I lived in NYC, I worked for a leading test prep company.
Most students who participated in class and completed their homework gained 50-70 points in the Verbal section, which consists of questions on sentence completions and reading comprehension.

SAT Writing

In my past experience as a SAT instructor, my students have gained 50-70 points and their confidence in answering Writing and Grammar questions on error identifications, improving sentences, improving paragraphs and writing a cohesive essay no matter the prompt.
