I hold undergraduate and advanced degrees in the subject, including an MA and a PhD from Stanford University, and while I am an American have spent some 7 years living, studying, working and traveling in Taiwan and the mainland.
For the past several years I have been the Upper School teacher and director of the Chinese language program at a school in Manhattan. I stress accurate learning of all aspects of the language, from pronunciation to grammar to usage. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
