Rowan University (Elementary Education)
I believe that Malcolm Forbes captured the joy and passion I feel in teaching when he wrote: "Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one." It is an educator's duty to capture the curiosity and open-mindedness of young children and replace it with confidence, knowledge, and drive to be the best that they can possibly be." I believe that students learn best from hands-on experiences. I believe that teachers who demonstrate curiosity and passion about a subject area and who motivate students to learn are the successful ones.
Hello, my name is Megan L. I graduated from Rowan University with a BA in Elementary Education and Special Education. I have been teaching the last 3 years in special education classrooms, both self-contained and push-in general education. I have a passion for finding new and innovative ways to teach children and being creative. I think that learning should be loud and fun, and my teaching is influenced by those beliefs. Some of my best attributes as a teacher include exceptional organizational skills and extensive knowledge of my subject area.
Over the last 3 years, I have taught grades Kindergarten through 4th grade, using the Everyday Math program. Through my experience teaching special education, I have found creative and engaging methods to teach students complex concepts and allow them to excel with their math skills. I also am a firm believer in mastering math facts, both addition and subtraction for younger grades as well as multiplication and basic division facts for upper grades, and this will be a large component of my math tutoring.
Grammar will be addressed with session-based, basic grammar lessons as well as sentence-fixers. By reviewing core grammar and sentence skills/structure, students will gain the introductory skills for basic grammar skills.
With a focus in core phonics skills, my tutoring students will become successful in chucking and learning how to break down words themselves and recognize common spelling patterns, which will then allow them to read more fluently. I have experience with the Wilson programs, both Fundations and the upper-level Wilson programs. Drilling sight words will also be a key component of my phonics tutoring, which will also allow for more fluent reading.
I am a huge believer in test prep and study skills, as well as teaching organization. I believe that if strong organization skills are taught in the early grade levels, it will prepare students for the future and allow them to gain the important study skills that will make them a successful student. Test prep and study skills will be reviewed through practice tests and learning to eliminate choices, find key words, summarize, etc.
I have a flexible schedule and am available on weekends, and look forward to working with you! :) I believe that Malcolm Forbes captured the joy and passion I feel in teaching when he wrote: "Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one." In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have experience teaching with the EveryDay math program for the last 4 years. I also have training in "MyMath" program and was a teacher of Special Education for the last 4 years.
Experience with the following programs: Wilson and Fundations (multi-level), Reading Mastery and Reading Mastery Plus, Journeys, and Lucy Calkins Reading and Writing Workshops
