I am currently a third grade teacher in the Pennsauken Public School District. I also tutor a few students in the Old City section of Philadelphia. I have also previously taught first grade in Camden, NJ. I truly love guiding students to feel successful in their learning. With the large array of demands that schools are given, and then passed onto their students, I find it exciting to work with elementary students in setting and reaching short and long term goals. I have tutored for a company in Philadelphia for nearly 4 years now and I also tutor for my school district twice a week. I have experience with tutoring students as low as 4 years old, up through 7th grade. I have tutored in letter/sound recognition, reading readiness, decoding strategies, comprehension and analyzing texts, math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), fractions, basic geometry and even science and social studies.
I work hard for you to obtain new skills and strategies that can best equip you in and out of the classroom. I'll even make it fun! I love using hands on objects such as dice, a deck of cards, counters, money and even Legos to help create concrete examples of a variety of math skills. I also have an extensive personal library, which is leveled according to Fountas & Pinnell leveling system, to guide instruction in reading and/or language arts. There are so many methods to help students in obtaining their goals and I seek to find the methods best fit for them! Reaching each student at their ability level is important and is truly the key to tutoring success. I enjoy tailoring each lesson to your individual needs, and develop tools for your success in and out of the classroom on a variety of content levels.
I would love to assist you in reaching your goals in the classroom. Don't hesitate in taking this big step towards success! You deserve to feel confident with each new strategy and skill that is mastered. I look forward to hearing from you soon and setting up some lessons that fit your schedule! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Cabrini College. I also have a master's degree from Drexel University in Teaching, Learning and Curriculum. I taught first grade for 3.5 years, and am currently teaching 3rd grade. I also ran a Common Core based afterschool program for one year, where I evaluated teacher lesson plans to assure alignment to Common Core Standards for grades 4-6.
I student taught in a Kindergarten classroom and then taught first grade for 3.5 years. In these years of experience, I have worked with students utilizing pencil grip devices, as well as other occupational therapy strategies to assure proper pencil grip when writing. I have had experience utilizing the Handwriting without Tears curriculum as well as the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting. Both contain varying degrees of modelling and hands-on or interactive handwriting instruction.
I taught first grade for 3.5 years and utilized a variety of phonics strategies. More recently, my school district has adopted the Common Core based ELA program of Journeys. The Phonics curriculum embedded in this program include sound/spelling cards and teaching students through spelling words, the variety of phonics skills and strategies we use to compose as well as decode new words. A strong base in Phonics leads to a strong base in reading readiness.
