University/Montclair State University (Master's)
I am a Graduate student living in Mahwah, NJ. I received my BS from NYU in Communications in 2013. Now, I am a MAT student at Montclair State University with a concentration in English. My projected graduation year is 2017. My current occupation is in child care and I am looking for tutoring jobs in my downtime. The process would benefit your child as much as it would benefit me; I am eager to spend time with students one-on-one in order to gain more experience in the education field.
In the past, I tutored for a group of elementary students in Englewood, NJ. The program focused on test prep, more specifically, the COOP exam. Lesson plans focused on grammar and mathematics, the two subjects that comprised a bulk of the exam. Throughout the rest of the year, after the exam took place, I focused on homework help and study strategies.
The greatest aspect of tutoring is the one-on-one experience; I feel oftentimes children clamp up in a classroom setting, stemming from confidence issues, or just being a shy in nature. A tutoring session can offer a less anxious environment for a child. My experience in childcare for over 10 years now enables me to make most children feel comfortable, a key part in succeeding as a team.
I was educated in Catholic, private schools for both Elementary and High School. As is customary in Catholic schooling, a large part of my education was focused on grammar, reading, and writing. As I entered High School, I was placed in higher level English and took AP English Literature in my senior year. In preparation for the exam, I underwent a rigorous study of the structure of american English. Grammar, spelling, and especially vocabulary became a central part of my life as a student. Consequently, I have decided to continue my studies in English Education at Montclair State.
At Montclair, I am continuing my studies of American English with linguistics courses and writing intensives.
Spelling and handwriting are one of my greater strengths. I am deeply enthused by language and I a firm believer in the importance of being a good speller. I believe spelling can offer students a greater chance at succeeding on standardized writing exams as well as building confidence in their writing assignments. A lot of my success in school was due to spelling studies. I became an avid speller and competed in state competitions.
My availability ranges from early mornings to evenings. I have open availability mornings Mondays and Wednesday until mid-May (weekends are completely open). Starting May 27th, I will be available Thursday and Friday mornings, as well as weekends. I look forward to meeting some great students through this process. Talk to you soon!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
