About Tomomi

I came to the U.S. 20 years ago. I believe teaching Japanese and music is a mission of my life. Since both are a part of myself, I would like to contribute those my skills to someone who willing to learn. I prefer to teach for beginner to intermediate level of students.

I have studied with Mr. Tomio Nakano who was the principal flutist at NHK Symphony Orchestra (1984-1988) and Ms. Keiko Gomi who was a principal flutist at Kosei Wind Orchestra (1980-1984) in Japan.

My orchestra and concert band experiences are shown as follows: Rikkyo University Symphony [1984-1988]; New City Orchestra [1990-1995]; NIH Symphony Orchestra [1997-1999]; Ramsey Wind Symphony [2010-2012]; South Orange Symphony [2009-2012]; Teaneck Concert Band [2007-2015 *summer only]; Essex County Summer Players Orchestra [2010-2015 *summer only]; Central Jersey Wind Ensemble [2014-current]; Ridgewood Concert Band [2007-current]; and Livingston Symphony Orchestra [2012-current].

I also taught Japanese voluntary to my own child and friends. And I worked as a bilingual employee for numerous industries since I came to the U.S. I also took culture awareness courses and studied differences between Japan and the U.S. in education and culture.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Japanese

I am Japanese and came to the U.S. 20 years ago. I have taught Japanese to my 21 year old son and some of my friends. He didn't go to any Japanese supplementary school but he is an excellent bilingual now. I am working for a Japanese company and every year, conduct Japanese culture class for children at the Take a Child to Work Day event. I also play a traditional Japanese instrument, Koto. I should be able to teach Japanese not only just a language, but also some introduction of Japanese culture.

Genuine and Warm

Tomomi is a genuinely pleasant, warm, attentive and inventive Japanese tutor. She is designing an individualized program for me. The first lesson went buy very quickly. We discussed some elements of the Japanese culture; touched upon grammar, pronunciarion, learned new words. At the end Tomomi treated me with something special and fun :)
