Dear Potential Student and Parents,
I am a retired teacher with thirty-nine years of experience. I have worked as an elementary teacher in a self-contained classroom teaching all subjects. I have taught grades 1-5 in the Kenilworth School system. I graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education. I also have a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters Degree as a speech therapist. While teaching, I obtained thirty credits beyond my Masters Degree in Elementary Education.
I have been responsible for teaching math, reading, language, science, health, and social studies. I am trained in the use of manipulatives when teaching math to secure understanding. This makes the subject mater more concrete and helps achieve understanding. I've taught departmental science. I was responsible for the education of all third and fourth graders in this area. I have had courses in writing workshop. These writing classes have taught me the latest techniques which enhance the learner's ability to create a good paragraph and essay. My phonetics background enables me to help students learn vocabulary and to increase reading skills. I use a hands-on approach when teaching. This creates understanding not just the ability to memorize. I have taught children who have been gifted, average, and below average. I anticipate being successful with meeting your needs.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a retired teacher who taught classroom reading for 38 years. Many of my students had dyslexia. Accommodations were made to help them learn how to read and see words correctly when their brains saw them in a distorted manner. I have a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters of Arts as a speech therapist which gives me a strong phonics background and ability to hep individuals learn how to read when they have disabilities.
I am a retired teacher from the Kenilworth Board of Education in Kenilworth, New Jersey. When teaching for thirty-eight years in Harding Elementary School, I taught first, second, third, fourth, and fifth grades. Test taking skills, writing essays for NJ ASK testing, understanding mathematics, and using manipulatives are just some of the areas of my expertise.
I have taught math for 38 years in the Kenilworth school system. I retired in 2010 and now substitute teach in the districts of Livingston and Kenilworth. I want children to understand math so I emphasize building meaning by using squared materials and manipulatives. In order to memorize to obtain speed, you also must understand math. I enjoy helping children realize how important math is to everyday life.
I have taught reading throughout my elementary teaching career of 38 years. I have a degree as a speech correctionist, which provides me an extensive background in phonics. A phonetic approach to learning vocabulary is essential to good reading skills. I have also been trained in a whole language approach with emphasis on reading comprehension skills.
Writing has always been an area in which I excel. I enjoy teaching students how to express their beliefs, feelings, and knowledge. If you can speak then you can write; however, when writing formally, you must employ correct grammar and punctuation. These skills must be mastered, and oftentimes need reinforcement.
