I am a finance and engineering professional that will help high school students achieve their full potential on college entry exams. Preparing for these test can be a daunting hurdle for many students. I find that teenagers generally know more than they think they know; the challenge is showing what they can do on a mind-numbing four-hour test on a Saturday morning. Most high school students have very busy schedules, so I always try to tailor tutoring and test practice in areas where the student will achieve that greatest impact.

The one-size-fits-all concept from the big test prep companies tends to bore the students in the areas where they excel and move too quickly in the areas where individuals need more instruction and practice. For SAT and ACT test prep, I like to give a lot practice tests and then use the results to hone the weaker skills and work on test taking strategies. In addition to college admissions test prep, I also have a strong background in mathematics, physics and statistics and can tutor in these subjects.

I have been helping high school students prepare for the SAT and ACT for over six years.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

The ACT English section is about working quickly and efficiently. I like to practice using timed conditions and review grammar rules as needed.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

The ACT Reading test differs from the SAT Reading test in that it only has passage-based questions: There are no sentence completion questions. The ACT Reading test has less emphasis on vocabulary than the SAT Reading test. The main difficulty that student have with the ACT Reading test is its relative length. Students have just 35 minutes to read 4 passages and answer 40 questions. Practice is key so that students are able to effectively complete this test section. I like students to try different test taking strategies in order to find the ones that work best for them.
SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

The new SAT Reading is a difficult test for high school students to improve their scores. I like to work with students to improve their initial reading of the passages to get a good grasp of the central ideas. A solid understanding of the main points of any passage goes a long way to efficiently and correctly answering the questions. I also work on techniques such word matching to interpret difficult questions.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

The New SAT Writing is basically a clone of the ACT English section. I have been tutoring the ACT English for over four years and can help your student on the New SAT Writing. The New SAT Writing now includes more skills, including rhetoric, punctuation, style, and usage. While the test no long looks like a collection of grammar puzzles, students still need a good understanding of the fundamentals and need to learn find cleverly disguised grammatical errors. Students also need to practice looking for non-grammatical errors such as redundant and off-topic language.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra II is often difficult for students because they have trouble seeing the link between the equations (which are abstract) and the real world. I try to bridge the gap to show how the math represents the real world and also to look at alternatives in teaching and visualizing the key concepts.

I have tutored several students for geometry. Students often have problems with special relations and I look for ways to overcome these issues.
Physics,

Physics

I have a strong background in physical sciences and can help students with mechanics, electrical circuits, solid state physics, optics, as well as astro-physics.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

While the New SAT Math focuses more on material that is taught in high school Algebra and Geometry courses, the test still includes tricky and off-the-wall questions. I can help average students hone the core math skills and become more familiar with the format and types of question posed by the New SAT Math sections. I can also help students with the non-core skills and the very difficult questions.

Math

ACT Math,

ACT Math

The ACT Math section requires speed and endurance because of its length. Test taking skills for the ACT Math are different from the SAT Math. The ACT Math section require some pre-calculus (albeit at a basis level) that I can teach. The ACT test has few distracting/trick questions, so most student only will need to focus on the math concepts.

Extremely knowledgeable and patient.

I am currently being tutored for the SAT/ACT tests. It is great to know how to approach each of the sections of the tests and what to avoid to not waste valuable time. Great tutor...very patient and prepared.

Jeannine, 9 lessons with Steven

Steven is reliable, relatable, extremely knowledgeable and has the credentials to back it all up.

Steven helped teenage siblings, high school juniors, prepare for both the ACT and SAT. He worked with them individually, and as a pair. They both felt better prepared for taking these standardized tests, more so than from a school-based prep class.

Good first experience on short notice

We were referred to the site by a friend and did our research for tutors who specialize in the ACT. We were able to secure Steven on short notice and he was local and available. We had a very limited amount of time before the ACT for Steven to work with our child and in the end their ACT points went up and we were all very happy with the experience. We would utilize Steven again as it turned out to be a positive experience.
