I am a retired teacher with over 30 years' teaching experience. I have successfully tutored students in study skills, essay writing, English/Language Arts, and test preparation, including SAT, PSAT, ACT, and GRE. I have my own material for test prep, and will work with students with any texts/ books they have. One-on-one tutoring works best, and that's what I offer - in either your home, a local library or my home (whichever environment is quietest and motivates the student or makes the student most comfortable).
Students I have worked with have reported better organizational and study skills, increased scores on tests/re-tests for college entry exams (PSAT/SAT/ACT) as well as AP test prep (subject study skills as well as subject matter).
I will work one-on-one with test-prep problems from a variety of sources, and go over the mistakes made so that the student will know weaknesses. Then we work together with strategies to overcome those weaknesses.
Writing is my passion. I've had students who could not put together their ideas coherently, at first; after working with me students get over their fear and can show the scope of their knowledge through writing. I have many vocabulary lists and SAT test questions from varied sources to use.
With 30 years of teaching experience (with many of those years tutoring) I can help you master the pre-college tests and be ready for college application essays, so that the college of your dreams can become a reality. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been tutoring students for the verbal/English/writing portion of the ACT/SAT tests for over 10 years now. Many of my students scores appreciably increased after tutoring and re-testing. I have been told by parents that my tutoring helped their child get into the college of their choice.
I have been privately tutoring students for SAT/ACT testing since I retired, seven years ago. I have helped many students to improve initial scores and go on to their first choice colleges.
