I can teach or tutor nearly any math, at any level, including: Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Precalculus, Trigonometry, and all levels of Calculus (and even a few higher math levels).

I am a graduate math student, part-time math tutor, and adjunct university teacher. So I've taught students at all levels. Before returning to school to study math, I had a long computer programming career.

I excel in explaining math clearly and very patiently. I will give you structured, step-by-step written (so you retain what you learned) strategies for solving problems. My attitude encourages students to ask questions. I also have the ability to determine why students are confused even when they can't articulate it themselves.

I will show you methods for doing problems consistently, and methods for making problems easier. I will show you how to use the math notation to help you understand the problems. And I will even show you how to understand word problems (which you probably think is not possible).

MATLAB

MATLAB

I am using Matlab extensively for my thesis for a master's degree in math. I have been using it for about two years as part of my math studies. I was a programmer for many years before returning to school. I can help you with all of the basics of Matlab. I am capable of understanding the documentation (which is a bit cryptic, because it's written in math equations using math terminology), so I can quickly learn anything you need. I can even teach you how to understand the Matlab environment and docs so you learn more about Matlab on your own (so you never need to pay a tutor again!).

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have noticed that the single biggest success factor for Algebra 1 is practice - doing lots of problems (and then doing them again). But if you still need (or want) help, I will show you how to make the Algebra concept concrete and explain the math in plain language. I will also show you tips and techniques which will make the math as routine as the ABCs. I will also show you how to keep your work structured, which will help you understand it.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have taught classroom and computer based algebra courses at the university level and I have tutored many algebra students at the high school and university level with great success.
Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus is the most difficult math most students will ever study - unless I tutor you. I have great explanations of the three major Calculus concepts: limits, derivatives, and integrals/antiderivatives. I explain the ideas of calculus in such a way that you actually understand them. I highlight the key points (most teachers just lecture and then you are stuck looking at your notes wondering "how/why did the professor do that?" or "what the ____ did the teacher do there?"). When I tutor you in calculus, even the most math-challenged among you will do well (just read my feedback). As one of my student's said, I "have a knack for explaining calc so kids get it." After you get it, I will show you how those ideas relate to your homework and how they help you do the problems. I will even show you simple tricks for doing word problems (which you probably think is not possible). I can teach, inter alia: limits, derivatives, differentials, related rates, integrals, antiderivatives, calculating area, volume (shell method, cylinder method, etc.). As one former student said "Jeff is incredible! He tutored me through a college calculus course. The course normally has a 50% failure rate, but Jeff got me through it. He is very patient and provides great examples to help you understand the concepts."
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Beware of Precalculus (also known as really difficult Algebra) and Trigonometry. It is difficult even even for some students who were doing well in math. In precalculus, the student no longer mindlessly follows a set of rules, but must learn to understand the interpret questions and understand the math's meaning. But don't panic. I can explain everything in plain language and analogies (which I make up on-the-fly). And I will show you how to use the knowledge to do your homework. I will even show you a very simple method for memorizing the unit circle, which most teachers require.

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

I am a graduate college student. I have taken Discrete Math and will work with you and research answers to help you in any way I can.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I have a graduate degree in Pure and Applied math, which includes undergraduate and graduate level Linear Algebra classes.
Logic,

Logic

I can help you with symbolic logic, sentence logic and predicate logic. I can explain truth functional operators, necessary vs. sufficient conditions, contrapositive - my favorite! - and more. I will explain logic's concepts to you in plain English and everyday analogies (which I make up on the fly), in a way that your teachers and textbooks can't. I will show you techniques for making truth tables easy to do and understand. I will work with you on proofs and show you tips for doing them. I have not taken a formal logic course. But I have a computer science undergraduate degree and mathematics graduate degree; I was a computer programmer for many years. Both programming and math have strong logic components to them. I have tutored several people in logic and earned testimonials from them. Depending on your needs, I will teach by working through your textbook, notes and assignments with you. I will adapt to your needs and can create examples and find supplemental material between lessons, if necessary.

Trigonometry is all about right triangles. Yes, an entire course about right triangles! I know, that probably doesn't sound so exciting to you. But I will help you make the material easy. The first step is to memorize "SOH CAH TOA". The second step is to contact me (though you may not have to if you follow the first step.

Great tutor

Jeff is an excellent math tutor. He is very patient. He did a fantastic job of explaining algebra to my son. He made the lessons interesting and easy to grasp. These concepts were a level higher than what my son was doing in school. He was well organized and came with enough resources to give him additional practice.

Great Tutor: Wish We Had Found Him Sooner!

Jeff was extremely patient and very knowledgeable on the topic of calculus. He explained things in a way that was clear and logical so that the information was easily transferable in class and on tests. I would highly recommend Jeff and use him again if needed.

Very nice, very knowledgeable.

I had Jeff for Matlab debugging assistance. He informed me from the beginning that he didn't receive formal training in Matlab, but he used it for his graduate study, so I expected a slow accomplishment in the debugging. However, he grasped the program idea quickly and helped me fixed the errors in my program. He also replies promptly to emails and always on-time for tutoring sessions. Very happy that I made the right choice and picked Jeff as my Matlab tutor!

Great tutor that is very punctual, and makes learning math fun and easy.

Studying to be an electrical engineer is not an easy endeavor. Ever since I can remember, I was not good at math. I thought I could get away with basic math knowledge, however that was not the case when my major required I know Calculus 1. I came to the conclusion that the only way that I was going to excel in math was by getting a tutor that can break math down for me one step at a time, both visually and through theory and understanding. Jeff has met these obligations, and acts and teaches in a very professional manner. He is very punctual and has a flexible schedule to work around. However, most importantly, he is a teacher that knows how to share and teach to you the subject. I have had tutors in the past that claimed to have 4.0 GPA’s and such, but when it came down to teaching me, the end result would be a complete failure; it is as if at times, I would be better off studying on my own. Jeff, on the other hand, takes a hand on approach that actually makes you want to learn math, and look forward to going to class. I would recommend anyone in need of math help to give Jeff a try, and watch as you excel in math.

Great tutor, very responsive.

I met with Jeff to go over Calculus and he was very knowledgeable and his explanations were extremely helpful. He not only showed me some things I needed to work on, but he also reinforced things that I did understand, but for which I had tentative confidence. I would definitely recommend Jeff as a tutor. He is patient, comprehensible and very capable of honing in on the areas in which I had trouble and needed specific attention. If you need help with math/calculus, based on my experience, Jeff is an excellent resource and a great choice for a tutor.

Excellent Tutor

Jeff was able to help my son, a college freshman, who is struggling with calculus. Jeff was able to identify some of the problems my son was having and helped him get a better understanding of the material in just a few lessons. Jeff was very accommodating and arranged his schedule around my sons availability as he was home for spring break and needed immediate attention. Jeff made my son feel very comfortable and he felt that Jeff was patient and clear with his instruction. I definitely recommend Jeff as a tutor. Jeff is very knowledgeable in his subject matter and is very thorough in planning the lessons. My son feels much more confident after working with Jeff and said that he would seek help from him in the future and would recommend him as well.

Excellent work from Jeff S.

Jeff S. Did a great job preparing me for a return to undergraduate Mathematics course work. I was very anxious about returning to college in my mid 40's. Based on my experience with Jeff S., I would certainly recommend him to other students, as he has proven to be a capable Mathematics instructor. Students preparing for undergraduate Mathematics course work would benefit from working with him. Jeff is very capable problem solver and an excellent instructor.
