About Marie

I am a lifelong writer and educator. I have taught in a range of capacities across the past three decades — from children through adults, one-on-one and whole-class — while also writing educational and training materials for both teachers and students.

In addition to education writing, I have worked as a newspaper reporter, a technical writer, and as a business writer. And I recently published a sci-fi/fantasy novel for upper-middle-grade and teen readers. I am a strong believer in helping students of all ages achieve their academic or literacy goals.

I am qualified to tutor all subjects at the elementary and middle school levels. At higher levels I specialize in language arts — the reading, writing, vocabulary, and study skills students need to succeed in school. I can also help young people and adults learn English as a second language, and help adults who already speak English strengthen their literacy skills or achieve a writing goal.

I offer a free 30-minute video or phone consultation before the first session to help launch a successful tutoring experience. During this consultation: (1) I strive to determine the current skill levels of each student. For school-age students, I may also ask to see samples of completed and graded school work, as these can help me assess an individual's academic strengths and weaknesses. A sense of a student's learning style and interests are also helpful. Then, (2) we set a goal for the tutoring experience. This step emerges naturally from the discussion of current skills, and should target the next level of growth in a skill area. Once the first goal is met, additional goals may be set.

Once tutoring begins, I encourage students and parents to communicate openly with me about the student's academic progress and challenges, as well as which tutoring interventions help most. This understanding can help me further customize my lessons to the student's needs.

I take a supportive and encouraging stance with all students and in return expect them to work hard to meet their goals. At the end of a tutoring session, I may assign "homework." This homework is intended to help students practice skills we work on together, because literacy skills do not advance without practice. Depending on the student's workload, this homework may be designed to be applied to their work on existing assignments. When there are no assignments that meet this need, appropriate assignments will be assigned.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
