I am a lifetime student with a BA in Psychology and a BS in Law & Justice from TCNJ, a law degree from Villanova School of Law, and a Master's in Clinical Psychology from Drexel University, a Masters in Educational Psychology, and a Psy.D. From Kean University in combined School and Clinical Psychology Program.

I have more than 20 years experience in tutoring a variety of subjects and in the last 10 years have tutored primarily in areas related to law, psychology (including research methods and statistics), study skills, and SAT verbal preparation. I worked for a period of more than 2 years for a nationally known test prep program tutoring SAT verbal programs. I am a NJ Certified Substitute Teacher and School Psychologist who has experience teaching children from pre-K to graduate school. I updated my Substitute Teacher Certification in August 2013, so I have copies of my most recent federal background check available if any parents would like to see it. I have 7 years of experience working in a special education school for children with emotional and behavioral difficulties, many of whom also have specific learning disabilities and ADHD.

Over the past 2 years I have worked as an adjunct professor at the college level teaching Professional Writing Seminars for Psychology majors, with a focus on APA style, as well as Statistics for Psychology. I am also a NJ Certified School Psychologist, which gives me good insight into students with special education histories and special learning needs.

My tutoring style generally involves discussions with parents and students about the students strengths and weaknesses so that a plan can be created that best fits with the student's needs while considering the student's learning style. When at all possible I like to integrate the student's interests into lessons, so that the student finds it easier to engage in the learning process, particularly for subjects they find challenging.

As I am currently completing my post-doctoral fellowship. As such, I usually only schedule tutoring appointments for Saturdays and Sundays. From time to time I have weekday availability, but I would likely be unable to schedule recurring appointments for weekday nights.

Study Skills

Each student's study needs are different, as all student's learn in different ways. In tutoring study skills I find it helpful to talk with the student and his/her parent/guardian to discuss the student's strengths and weaknesses to develop a plan that works for the student and/or their family. I also find it helpful to teach students about organization skills, effective note taking, and homework skills to facilitate studying in the most efficient way, while considering time management issues and skills. Study skills learned early in the education process help learning as student's progress through school and allow them to build skills to meet goals.

Students looking to make decisions about college sometimes find it helpful to talk with people who have insight into the process, can review their essays, or can help them determine which schools they should consider applying to. I have 6 years experience in helping students research and make these decisions and more than 15 years experience in assisting with college application essays. Each student has certain objectives in attending college and is looking for different criteria. After consulting with the student and family about the preferences, I help the student find schools that best fit with their educational, career, and financial goals. Once the schools are selected I go over essay topics with students to develop strategies to best showcase the student's abilities and thoughts in the context of the essay requested by the college or university. In addition, for students who are anticipating college interviews, I work with the student on practice interviews, developing answers to the questions most likely to be asked of them, and provide strategies for the interview. As someone who has attended college and then three graduate programs, I am very well versed in the process of applying to schools, writing essays, and surviving the interview process. I would love to share that knowledge with you or your student to help them find success.
