About Juanita

I was a volunteer at the elementary level as a teacher's assistant for five years, received an Associate's Degree in education/Criminal Justice from the UO Phoenix in Arizona, also received a certificate from Ocean County College in Toms River, NJ as a substitute teacher for grades K-12. I did substitute teaching for four years at the elementary level.

I am patient and give my students the benefit of my knowledge, and experience of my years as a one- on- one teacher. I find it is much easier for the student to respond at their own pace, and in their own way, as compared to being in the classroom with many other students that they feel they must compete against. The student is more relaxed and responsive in a one- on- one lesson. I prefer to do my tutoring at the nearest library, it is so much more convenient if any further information is needed to explain the lesson to the student in order for them to have a better understanding of the current problem.

I am an avid reader. I think by now I must have read every book in the library. I enjoy all books on many subjects, but my favorites are Sci-fi, comedy, thrillers, and mysteries. If I can change just one child's outlook on life through reading then I have done my job... Through reading you can become a pilot or a ships captain and travel to far away places in search of a pirate's buried treasure, king Solomon's mine, and maybe even a trip to Peter Pan's Never, Never Land. Now that would be fun.

Let's read together and take a trip on a whaling ship in the cold north Bering Sea, with wind blowing hard and the rain beating down as we search out the whales. Or, perhaps we could climb mount Everest, which is considered the highest mountain in the world. Please come join me on my next adventure...

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a substitute teacher I taught K-6th grades for several years, I also tutored these grades on a one-on-one basis for those who were failing/falling behind. My educational background qualifies me for this position. I graduated from UO Phoenix and Ocean County College. I like to combine puzzles/games along with lessons to make learning more enjoyable and fun, such as sight words bingo, word searches, and rhyming sight words, just to name a few, I do this with all subjects and ages, it's amazing how interested they become in learning.

ESL/ESOL

I use certain tools and materials such as word searches, reading/comprehension short stories and phonics workbooks, and many conversations. After assessing the student to see how much of the English language they know and understand, I make lessons plans accordingly. I have been doing ESL for several years as a one-on-one basis in the Lakewood School District, which is a multi-lingual and multicultural area. My educational background gives me the qualifications that I need to tutor ESL students.

Grammar

While I was teaching in the local school districts, part of my tutoring was to teach reading, comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. I did this by using worksheets, games, puzzles, books, writing sentences and short stories. My many years of teaching has given me the techniques to show others my experience for learning and to pass this on to them.

Handwriting

My qualifications for a handwriting tutor come from courses I have taken at UO Phoenix, and Ocean County College. I also have tutored for many years as a volunteer and substitute teacher for the Lakewood and Toms River, NJ. school districts, helping children on a one-on-one basis. I try to make learning fun, to encourage each child to do their best by tracing pre printed sheets of letters and numbers. I use simple pictures of fruit, animals, and things, and ask them to write a one sentence statement of what they like about the picture.

Reading

I enjoy teaching reading, vocabulary and grammar, I have taught PK-12, but prefer the lower grades. I use games, puzzles, worksheets among my tools to help the children enjoy learning to read. I am patient and caring. And, I know I can help your daughter to learn a new skill and raise confidence in herself.
I am a graduate of UO Phoenix, and Ocean County College,

Vocabulary

I have taught vocabulary for many years in the New Jersey school districts. I taught on a one-on-one basis, and in groups. I use many tools in my teachings such as worksheets/workbooks, puzzles, games, and sight words (for the child's grade level). The look on the child's face when they read and understand what they have read on their own is most rewarding.

A patient and careful tutor for children with different ages

Juanita has taught our kids (three children with different ages). She encouraged them and was able to improve their level of English. We have noticed that they could write better and, the most important thing, is that they feel important as they became a reward the last day. We are very thankful to her.
