About Thomas

Dear Parents,

If your child is struggling with reading comprehension, creative or nonfiction writing, or any other facet of an English Language Arts classroom; then I am here to help. Any tutor can sit and help a student polish a paper or get work completed for class. I am here to offer something different. My goal with students is help them gain the academic tools and confidence that every student needs to make them feel competent and comfortable with the work they are being asked to do.

It is through understanding, individual attention, and of instruction that we can help your child conquer his or her academic battles. I look forward to discussing with you and your child how I can help make a significant and meaningful impact on your child’s academic career. Thank you for your time.

In partnership,

Thomas K.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a certified Teacher of English K-12 in the state of New Jersey. With four years of experience teaching English and Reading/Writing Workshop, I can provide the expertise necessary to help all students gain skill and confidence in English language and literature. I have a B.A. in English as well as an M.A.T. in English from Montclair State University.

Literature

Literature is a particular passion of mine. I received a B.A. in English from Montclair State University. In that program, I focused on Victorian Literature. I am also well-versed in most areas of fiction and poetry. In 2008, I was awarded the Recognition of Excellence Award from ETS for my score on the Praxis II Subject Test in English Language and Literature.

Reading

I am a certified Teacher of English K-12 in the state of New Jersey with four years of experience teaching English and Reading/Writing Workshop. I have also received my M.A.T. in English from Montclair State University. In that program, I took many graduate level courses related to the teaching of reading for students of all needs and abilities. Finding a proper fit between student and text is absolutely essential for helping students become successful, thriving readers.

Writing

Writing is my passion, hobby, and an activity in which I immerse myself daily. I've been writing for years. I've written two yet-unpublished young adult novels and am working on screenwriting currently. I am a certified Teacher of English K-12 in the state of New Jersey with four years of experience teaching English and Reading/Writing Workshop. I have also received my M.A.T. in English from Montclair State University.

I have worked with hundreds of students to improve their writing abilities. There are many people who can work to improve a paper or an assignment, but I come from the belief that students need to be taught how to approach the writing so they are capable of improving their own work. Using model papers and teaching students how to assess their own, and others', work is part of the key to unlocking a writer's real potential.
