About Amy

Hello!

My name is Amy S. and I am 25 year old education student looking to tutor while finishing my last semester in school and throughout my time as a teacher. I have always loved working with children and students. I am a student at William Paterson University who will be graduating in the fall with a teaching certification for education k-5, a 5-8 endorsement, a teacher of students with disabilities certification as well as a second major in English literature. I have worked with ages ranging from 1 year olds to 8th graders in daycare, pre-schools and aftercare programs .

To me teaching is much more than having students recite learned information, it is about the students growing confident in their abilities and learning to find the tools that work best for them to create successful students. I am a very interactive, hands on type of teacher with a love and enthusiasm for learning! I have experience in breaking down lessons and finding the best type of learning style for individual students. What I love most about tutoring is getting to learn a students needs on a one to one basis and allowing those students qualities and strengths to shine and help guide the lessons. In my opinion just to recite information or learn to take a test is not what it is most important, but to be able to understand how and why and create that spark of interest is how we get student to love to learn. That is my goal when tutoring, to create an environment that inspires confidence in the classroom and in ones self, as well as letting my students know that they are safe, capable, and that I'm here to help. Thank you for taking the time to read my profile!

I am and English major, and have taken classes for English education for the last 4-5 years. English is a passion of mine and I am studying to be and English literature teacher for middle school. I hold a 3.8 GPA in both my English major and my education major. I also have taken the classes necessary to be endorsed in special education. I feel it is extremely important to understand and know how to work with every type of learner in the classroom.

I would love the opportunity to help bring that love of learning and instill confidence back into students. Please feel free to contact me and ask any further questions you may want to ask. I am a very open and understand person who just wants to do what's best for students who may need that extra bit of encouragement. Please feel free to contact me anytime. Thank you again for your time and I hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I will be a certified TSD teacher (teacher of students with disabilities) when I graduate in the fall. I have worked in a classroom with children with special needs for my practicum for a full semester. I also have taken all the necessary credits to receive a special education certification. I have worked with young students at daycare one on one to create educational plans for students with ADD/ADHD as well as have written and worked on IEP's and 504's. I hope to teach in my own special education classroom.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am student teaching for a teaching certificate for k-6, middle school endorsement as well as a TSD endorsement and an English Literature degree. I also have worked at an after school program working with 4th through 8th graders on STEM based projects. I have been a substitute teacher in 2 elementary schools, and 1 middle school as well. I have taken classes specifically on k-6 math, science, English and history. I also hold a 3.65 at William Paterson as an education major.

Elementary Math

I have earned a K-8 degree. I have also earned an English literature degree; a Special education degree; and I have a Middle school enforcement. I have experience with a practicum in math and science class. And I have experience as a Substitute teacher; a Preschool teacher; and I have performed after [school] care as a STEM leader for 4-8th graders.

English

I have an English literature degree. I have also worked as a Substitute English teacher. And I passed a middle school and elementary English exam.

Public Speaking

I have taken 3 credited courses on public speaking throughout my years in college. I have been the head coordinator for story hours, and family fun nights leaving me in charge of speaking to large groups of families and representing the company publicly. I have also been in charge of working different back to school events as well as community events where I had to speak about the company I worked for as well as give large groups of people information about the company and all that we offer.

Special Needs

I am qualified to tutor special needs students for a few reasons. One being that I have two practicums with two different special needs classes, one an emotionally disturbed class, and one was a pull out class. I have done a full semester worth of special education classes at William Paterson so that I can be certified as a TSD teacher. I have worked with many autistic children in the childcare field that I have been in for 9 years, as well as learned ASL. I am a very calm and patient person which makes me a great partner for a special needs learner. I have also worked with handicapped students as a substitute teacher. Throughout all these opportunities I have learned, and been taught a great deal on teaching students with disabilities.
