I have been an educator for nearly seventeen years. My passion for learning has been life long and continues to grow everyday. I graduated Seton Hall University with a BA in Criminal Justice and Sociology. I obtained my MA from Fairleigh Dickinson University as a Science Specialist. My education and experience are extremely diverse. I believe that this has been the foundation of my classroom and teaching experiences. I have completed additional graduate courses at Kean University and NJCU. Currently, I am completing my studies towards certification in TOSD (Teaching of Students with Disabilities). Over the years I have with worked with many students in assisting them with reaching their goals. I am skilled at making accommodations and modifications to lessons.
I have been a private tutor for many years and a home bound instructor as well. I have a strong sense of humor, a genuine commitment, and a firm belief that everyone can be successful. My going rate is between $30.00-$50.00 depending on subjects.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My undergraduate degree is from Seton Hall University in Criminal Justice and Sociology. I have been an Adjunct Professor in Criminal Justice & Sociology Courses. Areas I have covered in Criminal Justice include Law, Juvenile Law, and the development of our Penal System. I was an adjunct at Edna Mahon Correctional Facility for Sociology classes. I have talked about theorists, studied phrenology, endomorphs, ectomorphs, mesomorphs, studied crime rates around the world, and have done comparative studies in crime analysis. I also took a course in Forensics and the collection and analysis of evidence.
I possess a Standard Certification in grades K-8 in the State of New Jersey. I have taught Kindergarten and grades 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. I believe that incorporating a variety of subjects into my lessons such as reading and social studies, math and science, and utilizing writing in all disciplines fosters growth and development. I enjoy utilizing a hands-on approach and manipulatives to assist my students to grasp essential concepts. I employ writing techniques such as RACER and Collins Writing into my lessons. Fostering a love of reading in all subjects contributes to the overall success of my students.
I have been a social studies teacher for over eleven years. I hold certification in Middle School Social Studies for grades 5-8. In addition I have certification in Social Studies for 9-12. In the 6th grade I taught World & Comparative Religions. We studied all the major religious groups, polytheism, and monotheism. I started with ancient civilizations and their beliefs carrying it through to modern day religious views. We looked at many of the ancient scripts and texts of several religions.
As an Adjunct Professor at Essex County College I taught Sociology and Criminal Justice Courses. My undergraduate degree is in Sociology & Criminal Justice from Seton Hall University. Certified in Social Studies grades 5-12 areas I have covered in Sociology have been human development, social development, social classes, law & deviant behavior. I have covered Margaret Mead, Emile Durkheim, Plato, and others.
I have completed 18 credits of the required 21 credits to earn my Teacher of Student with Disabilities Certification for the State of New Jersey. I am familiar with laws regarding students of special needs. I have written IEP's with members of CST. I am aware of accommodations, goals, and modifications: I can adapt lessons to meet the needs of each individual. I believe that there are multiple ways and approaches that can help a child succeed. Utilizing a variety of instructional techniques and differentiated instruction is a key to every child's success.
