About Lucas

I came to private tutoring after two years working in a private school as a history, government/economics, and essay writing instructor. The school provided an in-class environment for home-schooled students, and as such I worked with students who had a variety of needs, learning styles, and ability levels. I taught 7-12th grade, and the small class sizes allowed for very personalized instruction, something I realized I preferred, as it allowed me to work more closely with students and their learning needs. On the advice of a friend, I began tutoring after I moved away from south Jersey.

I enjoy tutoring because it allows to me to work directly with students who need help the most. Whether it's a student who needs extra help understanding lessons and studying for tests, or a student who wants a few more points in a difficult class, it's a tutor that can make the difference for a student. Tutoring also allows me to be a part-time musician, which is something that I enjoy doing when not working.

I consider myself to be a professional tutor with a personable and friendly demeanor. I will bring structured lessons and a teacher/student environment, but I still try to maintain a more relaxed level of interaction. Tutoring feeds off the back and forth between tutor and student, and open discussion are, in my experience, the best ways to help students who are struggling.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Political Science

I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Rutgers University, with the topic of my seminar paper being the spiral model of international relations as they applied to the start of World War I. From there, I taught Political Philosophy and a Current Events class at a private school in New Jersey. I attempt to bring a focused hand to the study of Political Science by using current examples of generic subjects and topics, and I have had much success teaching students through a Socratic style of discussion.
