About Elizabeth

I have had a plethora of rewarding educational experiences with students of diverse backgrounds, both as a classroom teacher and as a tutor. As a by product of my experiences, I have become especially adept at targeting children's’ varying needs and at raising their threshold for learning. I am passionate about empowering my students and helping them discover their learning strengths, which has helped them to improve both their test scores and overall grades.

I am a highly qualified certified teacher in Early Childhood and Elementary School Education. I am currently working as an interventionist for students in grades one through five in both math and reading. I am also attending graduate school to earn my masters in teaching students who struggle with learning disabilities. In addition to classroom teaching, I have tutored for many years- both within and outside of my certified teaching areas.

I have had experiences preparing students for SAT Reading and Writing from grades 9-12. It is my belief that students benefit immensely from one-on-one instruction, as it allows me to delve into their weakest areas and improve upon it. I have cultivated strategies that help students gain a deeper grasp of grammar rules as well as the sentence structure of their essays; I have also enhanced their reading comprehension skills through a focus on main idea, tone, and purpose.

I am generally available after school or evening hours Monday-Friday, and also on the weekends. Throughout the summer, my schedule becomes more flexible. I have excellent references, which I will gladly provide.

I am looking forward to helping your child reach his or her own potential as a learner.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

As an interventionist in both math and literacy, I am always cognizant of the core content standards when planning and designing my lessons. In order to ensure the effectiveness of my instruction, I implement lessons with a focus on critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills. My lessons and units are planned according to the Understanding by Design method. Thus, my students have clear-cut objectives and goals that are anchored by a systematic and predictable structure.

Dyslexia

I am currently enrolled in graduate school for students with learning disabilities, which requires course work on students with Dyslexia. I have taught- and am currently teaching- students at my workplace who have been diagnosed as Dyslexic. I incorporate multisensory strategies that help to link listening, speaking, reading, and writing together.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a certificate in Elementary Education (grades K-6) and I am currently working towards my masters in Special Education. I am currently working as a district interventionist (in both reading and math) for students in grades first through fifth grade. As an interventionist, I am working in small groups of three to four students or one-on-one; this focused attention engenders student growth, as I am better able to hone in on the specific strengths and weaknesses of my students.

Phonics

I have been trained in both PhonicsFirst and Orton Gillingham phonics-based programs, which are multi-sensory instructional methods that help students successfully acquire the skills needed for reading and writing. I have utilized this instruction with students within my own school and have seen immense growth in their phonemic awareness abilities and their ability to decode.

thorough and flexible tutor — I had an excellent first impression of Elizabeth. I like that she did a thorough reading assessment so that she will able to hone in on my daughter's specific learning needs. Elizabeth was able to identify patterns that other teachers have not and this was promising. I look forward to seeing the types of lessons that she will plan. Elizabeth was also flexible with her time which is a big plus ...
