About Elizabeth

I am a PhD candidate working on my dissertation in Theatre History at Tufts University. I love how Theatre History encapsulates an intersection of subjects- politics, culture, history, playwrighting, design and beyond! I am also an actor and director in New York and always bring a sense of humor to my teaching style. I teach a wide range of ages from 10-45. I have taught in Italy, Boston, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania in colleges and specialized schools. I also privately coach actors for audition preparation and character work.

I have my MFA in Acting from the Actors Studio. Areas that I teach in theater include acting, directing, theatre history, scene analysis, and audition technique. These skills also extend to my experience in tutoring in public speaking, presentation skills, and conference preparation.

I am flexible with meeting times, weekends and evenings are okay. I have a 24-hour cancellation policy.

Feel free to reach out with any questions and I look forward to continue to work with an array of students!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

European History

As a PhD candidate in Theatre History, much of my coursework centered on European History. The reason is Theatre is an intersection of politics, governmental regulation, power structures and culture. In order to understand how art reflects trends in society, I must have a comprehensive understanding of the European History.

Literature

As a PhD candidate in Theatre History, we read a plethora of materials ranging from novels, scholarly articles, critical texts, and plays. I work with students to critically understand these texts as well as forming their own insightful opinion.

Proofreading

As a PhD candidate, I am constantly proofreading my own work as well as my colleagues. It is always useful to have another pair of critical eyes check over your essays, applications, homework, papers, theses, and so forth.

Public Speaking

I have run presentation skills workshops at Tufts University for PhD students and candidates that struggle with conference presentations, group work, and interviewing. I have my MFA in Acting from the Actors Studio and use my skills as a trained actor and director to give the students strategies in varying public speaking scenarios. Furthermore, when I teach in the university setting I require my students to make presentations with PowerPoint. I always provide a mini workshop at the beginning of the semester to set them up for success.

Theatre

Degrees: BA in Theatre/Political Science, Bucknell University; MFA in Acting, Actors Studio Drama School at the New School; PhD candidate in Theatre History, Tufts University.

I have taught acting at the elementary school level, undergraduate and graduate levels. I also privately coach acting students in preparation for BFA, MFA and professional auditions. I am currently teaching Theatre History at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.

Writing

As an undergraduate, I struggled with writing, worked with a tutor and worked hard to figure out how to effectively express myself in writing. Ten years later, I am writing my dissertation for my doctorate degree. I currently teach Theatre History at the American Academy and work with students individually who have challenges with writing.
