About Patricia

I feel fortunate to have grown up in a home where several languages were spoken and to have been given a disciplined education in English language from an early age. This background has led me to publish my writing and to work as a public speaker and even as an actor.

My undergraduate studies in Anthropology and Writing at New York University-Gallatin Division helped me to develop a broader and more sophisticated knowledge of the English language in all of its complexity, including roots of various words (etymology) and how language is used differently in different contexts.

As an English tutor, I have worked with adults from many countries including China, Cuba, South and Central America, Germany, and Russia for more than 20 years. Currently, I also teach school aged children and teenagers and help students of all ages prepare for examinations.

My services support children, teenagers and adults who wish to improve their reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation in American English. I can help students create well-composed, grammatically correct text, understand the written word better and build vocabulary, at any age level and any ability level.

Please contact me to discuss your needs and to schedule a lesson!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

My English qualifications include studies in anthropology and writing at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University, a life of avid reading of literature as well as nonfiction, research writing and much more.

ESL/ESOL

My qualifications to teach English as a Second Language began early -- I grew up in a multi-lingual home where friends and guests spoke many first languages other than English! I began formal ESL tutoring in the 1990s helping physicians trained outside of the U.S. improve their spoken and written English language skills. I currently tutor adults from Cuba, India and Russia.

QuickBooks

After learning general ledger accounting as a project manager at NYU School of Medicine, where I managed a $100,000+ annual budget, I incorporated my accounting knowledge into my freelance career. Examples of my QuickBooks experience include:
1. Helped a moving and storage company successfully stage for sale, in part by taking a bookkeeping paper trail system online to QuickBooks, including setting up chart of accounts.
2. Installed specialized QuickBooks for Nonprofits, set up chart of accounts and established procedures for a non-profit arts organization.
3. Took charge of a $12,000,000 annual accrual budget system (of a commercial photographic agency), resolved endless open issues, wrote new procedures, trained staff.

Theater

My theater qualifications include over 300 hours of dramatic training as well as experience teaching drama to adults and children. After more than twenty years acting in community, regional and off-off-Broadway productions, in 2013 I began a series of productions still ongoing for which I create the script, produce and direct the play. I have taught and directed adults as well as children. I have also worked behind the stage as house manager, costume consultant and develop musical scores with the musicians I hire for my stage works.

Writing

My Writing qualifications include studies in anthropology and writing at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University; published works in essay, editorial, fiction and poetry; and ongoing writing work as part of my creative work in theater. In addition, I have tutored adults and young people in English language, writing and literature for more than twenty years.
