About Danielle

Dear student/parent,

If you are looking for someone who is experienced in tutoring math and computer science, you are at the right place. A bit of background about myself: I studied Accounting and Management Information Systems in college and moved-on to working with MS SQL Server and applications development for 5+ years at a professional services firm before deciding to return to graduate school to obtain a Master's degree in Instructional Technology (in process). I have tutored both children and adults in private and group settings over the past 15 years, with subject areas including math, MS Office Suite, MS SQL Server, piano, Chinese, and arts and crafts. While not everything was smooth-sailing, each of the experiences were unique and helped me improve as a mentor.

What I love the most about tutoring is helping individuals improve and realize their potentials. The "Aha" moment is not only exciting for the students, but also brings a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction to me as one of the people who helped to make it happen. My format of teaching includes a combination of lectures with examples/demos, hands-on practices, and occasional quizzes. These allow students to gain a better understanding of the topics discussed and an opportunity to ask any questions that may arise during the practice session. My style of teaching emphasizes on understanding the materials (rather than just memorizing) through nurturing interest in the subject. One example would be when I created a scavenger hunt for a group of kids, where the solutions to a series of math problems helped them find the ultimate "treasure." Another example was when I tutored adults in my MS SQL class (which could be a dry topic to sit through in a lecture) by introducing them to a case study that is closely aligned to their role in the company; this, in addition to examples of how MS SQL can be used in conjunction with other tools to solve the issues at hand, kept everyone interested and focused on the learning.

Other academic backgrounds and merits that you may want to consider when selecting a tutor: I have studied Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, and Statistics/Probability throughout high school, and have achieved above 700 scores on my SAT I Math and SAT II Math Level 2, and 4 and 5 on my Calculus AB AP and Statistics AP exams. My experiences working in computer and data analysis fields post-graduation also enabled me to gain experiences in MS Excel, MS SQL Server, Qlikview, Tableau, C#, and a number of other programming languages.

Thank you for your interest in my profile and I hope to have an opportunity to help you reach your academic and career goals. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or interested in discussing lesson plans!

Best,

Danielle

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I am a native Mandarin Chinese speaker and am proficient in speaking, reading, and writing in the language. I have tutored children Chinese with the course materials that I created (including picture books and games) to make the subject and the learning experience more enjoyable, which in turn induced learning. Additionally, I have taken and received an 800 on the SAT II Chinese (With Listening) Subject Test.

Microsoft Access

I have worked with MS Access in both academic and professional settings, and have developed a couple of Access applications using macros and basic VBA. I am familiar with setting up Access databases, importing/exporting data, querying, and reporting. In addition, my experiences working with MS SQL Server on a daily basis for the past 5+ years also enabled me to have a good understanding of relational databases and best practices for database development.

Piano

I have attained the Certificate in Graded Examination in Music Performance (Grade 8) and the Award in Graded Examination in Music Theory (Grade 5) by the Associate Board of Royal School of Music. Additionally, I have tutored children aged 3 to 14 in piano for approximately two years for both leisure and recital purposes.

SQL

I have had 5+ years of professional experiences working with MS SQL Server. I'm familiar with its setup and functionalities, for both development and general querying purposes. I have facilitated training sessions for groups of adult learners in SQL Server querying, development, and optimization; and has played a key role in the development of several multi-functional applications that required frontend (ASP.NET or C#) and backend (SQL or MS Access database) coordination.
