About Dillon

Hello there. My name is Dillon H. I tutored throughout my college career (all four years) at a local school and it remains the best job I've ever had- and so, I'd like to do it more. I am a Mensa member. I have an IQ of 140 and a eidetic memory, and I was always "the brilliant but lazy" student in school. I'd like to think this makes me qualified to motivate students of similar prerogative to become brilliant but hardworking. I've taken 12+ years of piano (always enjoyed composing more than practicing my teacher's homework), was nominated to be tutor of the year at my college's tutoring program (and more importantly was my school's favorite tutor), and am at the end of the day, just some smarty pants that likes helping people out in this world's one meaningful pursuit- that of knowledge. Thanks for reading! Looking forward to tutoring whoever I can. Hello there. My name is Dillon H. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I was a member of the Chess team all four years of school (Byron High School, Coach Mike McHale). I have competed recreationally and in minor tournaments throughout college and to this day. I am familiar with all rules (stales, castles, en passants) and most common openings/defenses (Sicilian, French, Caro-Kahn).

Composition (Music)

I have had 14+ years of piano lessons from various teachers (references available). I've been composing since I could play, to the detraction of my assigned practice...I can play most melodies by ear, familiar with all notation. I can provide samples of my work.

Drawing

I have taken art classes in high school and college (Drawing I, design classes, etc...) plus 20 years of doodling. I was accepted into art school (didn't go). I know the basic figure drawing rules, chiaroscuro, shading and perspective. My samples are available.

Elementary (K-6th)

I tutored inner-city middle schoolers my entire college career, and occasionally 5th graders. I have received glowing recommendations for my gentile and patient tutoring and was nominated for tutor of the year and my students' favorite tutor, etc. I took AP/Honors English throughout school and am a broadcast journalism major with several communication/speech therapy classes in college.

Film

I took intro and intermediate film courses throughout college (and was Professor Anatsup Basu's favorite student) in addition to participation in theatre productions and independent film club. I have had two years as a professional actor, writer, director/AD, production assistant in Los Angeles. Specific credits/references are available upon requests.

General Music

I have had 14+ years piano lessons, 6+ years concert and marching band. I have familiarity with both Classical-Romantic works (from Hayden to Grieg), popular songs (for the more uninterested students), knowledge of all musical notation, forms, and genres. My work samples are available upon request.

Martial Arts

I have had 10+ years in Toku-Kai karate, although I quit one week before attaining black belt (long story about a new sensei and dojo politics). I have knowledge of all katas (forms) and moves in Toku-kai. I have an adaptable fighting style and am a quick learner. My teaching/tutoring style is safety first, wisdom second, and technique third. Samples of my work are available upon request.

Microsoft Outlook

I have full knowledge of Outlook and all its functions. I have had 10+ years of use, and understand how to have Gmail/regional ISP mail client accounts linked. I am familiar with both in-email functions and forms, main panel operation, and technical/server/connection troubleshooting and configuration.

Painting

I have had both grade school and college painting courses. I am familiar with watercolors and acrylics, color combination, nuances of stroke differentiation, composition, etc. References and samples are available upon request.

Piano

I have had 14+ years piano lessons under four teachers. I have a fair repertoire of memorized songs and strong play-by-ear capabilities, extensive composition experience, knowledge of all piano notation and genres. I have a gentle, patient, and fun tutoring methodology that gets the student wanting to learn for learning's sake (the goal of any competent educator). Samples are available upon request.

Social Studies

I have had 12+ years of social studies, history, political science, comparative literature, and sociology classes. I have had 4+ years of tutoring several types of social studies coursework and assisting teachers.

Theatre

I have had 8+ years acting in school plays and community theatre. I took several theatre courses in college, and participated in theatre and film extracurricular clubs. I was a professional stage and screen actor in Los Angeles for 2 years. I've read books on acting from Stanislavsky and Borislavsky (Acting- The First Six Lessons, greatest acting book of all time) to Meisner/Stella Adler. My full acting resume is available upon request.

Video Production

I am a Broadcast Journalism graduate. I was a WCIA News intern and Daily Illini reporter. I spent 2+ years lugging around and setting up cameras and sitting in editing bays. I have 2 years as a professional actor, director/AD, and production assistant in Los Angeles. I am familiar with both FinalCut and Avid, moderately familiar with most cameras, lighting equip, and boom/lav mics and sound equipment.
