Hi! Quite simply, I love teaching kids to read! I believe there is a direct link between reading well and writing well. I have a wonderful rapport with kids, and encourage them to be themselves (sometimes a little silly) and to find the joy in learning.
I incorporate reading out loud; for both the student and me. Hearing something well read opens up a child to learning the cadence of speech, new vocabulary and eloquent ways of expressing ideas.
I home schooled my own son from first through 5th grade. He began middle school this academic year with advanced reading and writing skills. In addition to tutoring Kindergarten through elementary reading and writing, I work with middle school students in grammar and writing as well. I often work with the middle school students in person once or twice each month, and then we email papers back and forth for editing purposes. It's a great way to save time and be sure that they are handing in the highest quality work possible.
I would welcome the opportunity to work with you and to make a real difference in your child's academic life.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have experience teaching reading, writing, reading comprehension and basic math. I work with students to understand what they read, and to proof read their own work so that they can improve clarity and minimize errors. I teach parts of language and sentence structure. I also focus on math fundamentals. My approach is to help the students understand the basics and feel free to ask questions; something that they often feel intimidated to do in a classroom setting. Whenever possible, I incorporate "real world" math to show them the benefit of learning and mastering adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. I feel a large part of elementary education is feel comfortable and confident with reading, writing and math basics. So my goal is to not only strengthen these skills, but to instill the self confidence and enthusiasm to excel.
I have experience teaching 3-6 year old students phonemic awareness. Using worksheets, coloring sheets, flash cards and singing we develop letter recognition, the corresponding sounds and spelling patterns. We develop recognition of sight words and early reading skills. Each lesson involves being read to aloud; and depending on ability, having the student read to me as well. Learning phonics can be FUN!
