About Nicole

Teaching is a craft, not a job. As an educator, I believe that my role is to assist young people in achieving their goals. My teaching style relies on interaction. I believe that much can be achieved through analytical discussion, which is then cemented by making notes and writing conclusions. My strength in my classroom is my ability to integrate literary skills and writing skills, which ultimately serves to prepare students with the skills required to succeed on any standardized test in Language Arts and Literature.
My decision to tutor is based on the realization that many students are entering high school without the necessary writing and analytical skills to succeed. As a mother of two teenaged boys, I have witnessed the inadequate instruction of research-based writing and effective use of citation. I have learned that elementary and middle school teaching has provided adequate practice of the skills, but I question the efficacy of the instruction of the fundamental skills in writing. As a result, when literary levels increase, students are left floundering to marry the requisite skills to effectively write about what they have read. I pride myself in bridging this learning gap for my students.
I have taught English at a variety of levels, including A.P. Literature, over the nearly twenty years that I have been in the classroom. I hold a B.A. in English/Secondary Education and Theatre. I earned an M.A.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction, with a specialization in Computers in Education. My experience is in US grades 9 and 10 English and UK-based IGCSE/Key Stage 3 curricula (the US equivalent of grades 7-12). I am highly trained in differentiated instruction, having trained with UVA experts Carolyn Tomlinson, Tonya Moon, and Catherine Brighton. Since 2006, my teaching has mostly been of sophomore English, both college-preparation and honors levels. I am active in a Vertical Instruction committee and enjoy much success in effectively preparing students for AP Language and AP Literature studies. In addition, I have a rating of highly effective, according to the Marzano evaluation method.

If you need a teacher that can help bridge the gaps in the areas of reading and writing, I hope that you will contact me. I am happy to meet at a local library or public café for sessions of at least one hour, but no more than two hours per meeting. I prefer to help students with actual projects rather than creating additional tasks, although that is also an option. I will not do the work for a student, but will guide the learner to a stronger understanding of concepts and to a mastery of identified skill sets.
I am extremely involved in my school community and prefer to book a week in advance for all sessions. I maintain a 24-hour cancellation policy, for which make-up sessions are available. I look forward to working together in the future.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
