Syracuse University (Adverrtising design)
My passion is photography and digital photo-illustration (manipulation of one or more images to make a personal statement). Having used Adobe Photoshop since its introduction to create images that appeared on the covers of national publications and advertising campaigns, I have an in-depth knowledge of Photoshop and what it can do. I would very much like to share that passion and the knowledge, that I've acquired over a forty year career, with fellow artists and students who are as passionate. Now I would like to share that passion, skill, and knowledge with you.
I ran a photo-studio in the photo-district on Fifth avenue in Manhattan. When I saw a demo of what a computer could do with an image (I did all of my prior image manipulation in the dark room or in camera) I felt like a cave man who had been rubbing two sticks together to make fire and was being shown a cigarette lighter. I knew that this was the future and I had to have it. As one of the first photographers in the country to have a color workstation in my studio, I literally pioneered digital photo-illustration for advertising and magazines.
My clients include: Time, Newsweek, and Discover magazines; and Intel, Nikon, American Express, Marriot Hotels, and Pepsico. Having written two full color hardcover books on photo-illustration and having lectured extensively in Europe, Canada, and the US on the subject, I feel qualified to help others to pursue their creative goals in this exciting field. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been working with Photoshop since its introduction and use it extensively to create all my digital photo-illustrations for clients. My photo-illustrations have appeared on the covers of national publications including Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, Time, Discover, and national ad campaigns for clients like Intel, American Express, and Pepsi Cola. In addition I ran seminars about digital imagery at Photo Expo at the Javitts Center in NY for 5 years and lectured extensively in Europe, Canada, and through out the US.
I majored in illustration at the High School of Art and Design in NYC and went on to Syracuse University College of Art where I received a BFA in Illustration and Advertising Design. Professionally, I was an Art Director for FCB Leber Katz World Wide and Creative Director for West and Brady Advertising for over eight years before going into photo-illustration. The eye for aesthetics, sense of composition, use of color and light were as valuable in photography as they are in drawing. My skills and talent as an artist are as good today as they were through out my life and most importantly I enjoy the one to one teaching experience of watching my student's enthusiasm grow as they master the skills of an artist regardless of the medium they choose to work in.
I was the owner operator of Tarhill Photos, Inc. in Manhattan. For 40 years I produced photography and photo-illustrations for the covers of national publications, including: Newsweek; Time; Discover; and Business Week, and Fortune 500 company advertising campaigns, including: Johnson & Johnson; Federal Express; Pepsi Cola; Colgate Palmolive; and Intel. I have participated in more than twenty events, from the Pro Cine Symposium in Zurich and the DPI Workshop in Amsterdam to the Artist in Residence Program at the Disney Institute in Orlando and the Visiting Artist Program at the University of Colorado. In addition I have conducted seminars in Europe, Canada and the United States including Multimedia Expo in Toronto, Professional Photo & Lab Expo in Wembly, G.B. and five consecutive seminars at Photo-Expo at the Javits Center in New York.
