About Judson

I’ve spent over eleven years tutoring students from high school level to graduate school in the fields of precalculus, statistics, calculus and probability. Much of this involved preparation for the SAT. I’ve taught at Ivy Prep School in New York City and at College of Staten Island. I take a kindly interest in the many problems students have with difficult course work and difficult instruction. I'm genuinely interested in helping the student see what is going on in the field, but if time is a pressure, I can go for as rapid a pace as is needed. I'm always curious about the psychology of the student and the student's needs to understand. I believe compassion and personal understanding are as important as the material. I'm very patient and I always search to find new ways to explain any difficult point.

My general focus is on probability, statistical analysis and calculus. But I'm happy to work or precalculus, geometry, and trigonometry, whether the aim is proofs or simply solving problems. Over my career I’ve spent many years programming and modeling in deterministic and statistical environments. This included of course writing many inhouse technical papers. Some of this involved options trading and the algorithms that go with that. In the scientific field I’ve done much analysis of experimental data using data smoothing, fft and transfer functions. Much of the software I developed was for manipulating experimental data and time series, especially as related to shock waves in solids.

I like helping people. I’m very patient and understanding with anyone new to the field or just needing to brush up. I have a natural interest in people, in the heart of your difficulties and how I can best answer your particular needs. I like people and I'm curious about your problems. Whether you're in it for a test in the short term, or you want to understand basic concepts, I'll try to follow that desire. I often find a unique way of explaining a difficult point and I don't mind going over things repeatedly until they're clear. We can go on as basic a level as you like, or we can zip through the high points if that will help most. I have many years experience as a systems analyst in Wall Street and the scientific community. This included statistical modeling, programming, etc.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
