About Irene

Hello! My name is Irene and I am a third-year medical student, currently finishing my clinical rotations with Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston and Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. I graduated with Honors from Stevens Institute of Technology in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Biology and a minor in Literature. I also pursued research studies in tissue engineering at Stevens and in clinical pathology at the University of Pennsylvania before attending medical school.

I have over five years of experience tutoring K-12, high school, and college students in various studies but primarily focusing in science, mathematics, and standardized exam preparation.

When I work with my students, I try to learn about them on an individual basis in order to truly help them excel in their studies. I try to understand their personalities, their interests and disinterests, their lifestyles and schedule that can influence their school work, all of which I utilize to create a complete and individualized academic support system. In the end, every student excels from his or her own unique capabilities, and I believe I can help find what works best for them and instill these academic skills for their future.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored for Algebra 1 in the past to middle school and high school students for academic exams as well as standardized tests such as the SAT.

Anatomy

Anatomy is a branch of science that studies the structure of the human body. As a high school or general college course, you are generally expected to learn the basic bodily structures, but the best way to learn is by incorporating them with their functions and trying to truly UNDERSTAND what they are and do rather than just memorizing them!

Biology

Biology is the study of life: it encompasses a vast number of subjects that are usually broken down into cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, etc. Whether you are studying for high school, Advanced Placement, SAT II, or college-level biology, I will be able to help you in your endeavors to excel in that subject. In high school, I have earned a 5 in my AP Biology exam, and in college, I graduated with honors majoring in Chemical Biology. I will be happy to tutor for general or specific topics in biology, and help you truly learn the subject rather than memorize.

Chemistry

Chemistry is the science of matter, involving the interaction of atoms and molecules. Though such a definition seems very simple to explain, chemistry is often complex and difficult to comprehend for high school and even college students. I have experience taking high school and college courses in general, organic and biochemistry, so I would be able to properly explain certain topics that are often too generalized in class and become misunderstood. I also had the opportunity to have a hands-on approach learning the material through research, so I am able to tutor students through methods taught inside and outside of the classroom.

Elementary Math

Working with children as a babysitter and as a tutor, I recognized that young students learn best when they enjoy the material. However, when it becomes too tough for them, they lose interest in the subjects. Alongside the material taught in the student's classroom, I will try my best to find different approaches that he or she will enjoy and will maintain the desire to learn.

Elementary Science

Elementary science involves the study of everything around us. This includes study of basic biology, chemistry, physical science, astronomy, etc. I will be able to tutor elementary science through practical explanations and different methods that meet a student's learning abilities.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is an word processing application that is used as a necessity for students, professors, and employees in a tech-savvy environment. Using Word, an individual is able to create flyers, contract agreements, essays, letters, etc. If you are interested in learning anything about the application, feel free to contact me!

Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry is a branch of chemistry that focuses on organic or carbon-based compounds. This college course is often taken by pre-medical students, pharmacy students, or those in pursuit of biology and chemistry majors. This course is often deemed as one of the most difficult chemistry (or even the most difficult science) classes a student takes in their curriculum. I have taken this course in college as part of my major and I have gained a hands-on experience on top of mastering it for the MCATs. Therefore, I can help you excel with good study habits, practice problems, and a good understanding of the material and all the organic reactions.

Phonics

I have several years of experience working with children to help them improve their abilities in phonics. I usually bring activities books or sheets and try to help teach them according to their capabilities and try to help them improve their speed and interest each step of the way.

Physiology

Physiology is usually incorporated with the study of anatomy, and is the study of the the functions of the human body. This course is often studied alongside anatomy because it helps to observe the structures and understand the purpose behind the human body behavior. Because this course involves more understanding of the body, I will be able to teach you in a way that you can understand it for quizzes, exams, and for future uses.

Spelling

Spelling is an important skill that is used in every aspect of our communication: completing homework assignments, conversing with others through writing, and writing during standardized testing. I can help break down certain aspects of spelling to help you improve with words you already know and predict the spelling for new words you may learn later.
