About Arielle

Being a teacher can be a tough job; many people ask me how I can do it. The answer is obvious once you have seen the smile of child who understands a new concept or skill, looking up at you victoriously with a palpable sense of achievement. Being a teacher isn’t just about the academics for me, however. I think helping students to gain confidence, become more organized and improve social skills is also a vital service teachers provide, and these are some of my favorite moments with students.

Being a learner can be a tough job! Since obtaining my Masters from Columbia University’s Teachers College, I have worked in a variety of settings with students ranging greatly in age and ability. I have seen many students struggle with the traditional approach to education. I can provide access to learning as it should be: rewarding, fun, and challenging, and above all, created with the understanding that each student has unique strengths and struggles but that every student can succeed.

As a special education teacher in New York City, I created modifications and accommodations and managed case files for students with special needs in an Inclusive Co-teaching environment. Such needs included learning disabilities, speech and language challenges, ADD/ADHD, autism, and emotional disturbances. I worked with students who are hard of hearing as well as students with more pronounced physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy.

Being a life-long learner is more important than any standardized score or essay length. When you love to learn, school work isn't a chore, it's interesting and exciting! Let me show you how- contact me to learn more and schedule a lesson

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

As a certified public school teacher, I received training on how to align progressive curricula with the Common Core standards to make sure students enjoy success as both students and community members.

Elementary (K-6th)

My MA from Teachers College, Columbia University is in Elementary Education and Special Education grades 1-6. I have taught 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade as a tenured pedagogue in the New York City public school system.

Special Needs

I obtained a Masters degree in Special Education from Teachers College Columbia University where I learned to create modifications and adaptations for students with a variety of special needs diagnoses in accordance with the goals on their IEP's. I have worked with students who struggle to succeed with both intellectual and physical disabilities in a variety of settings. Using behavior charts, organizers, checklists and cue cards, I make material accessible and enjoyable for all kinds of learners.

Study Skills

As a special education teacher in the New York City department of education, I used graphic organizers as well as other adaptive materials to improve the study skills from students in grades 1-6.

Writing

I have experience teaching many genres of writing in alignment with Common Core standards. This includes fiction, personal narrative, persuasive essay, expository essay and poetry. Using graphic organizers as well as effective brainstorming, planning and editing skills. I am trained in balanced literacy approaches, including the Teachers College Reading and Writing Program out of Columbia University.
