About Susan

I love teaching and learning. My first area of specialization is teaching reading to learning disabled children and adolescents. My chief experience is via six years of experience with TRI Services Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland as an Academic Therapist, using Orton-Gillingham methods to develop phonics skills and phonemic awareness. This approach is highly specialized. It involves unique materials, very close attention to an individual's learning profile and motivations, a multisensory approach, and close tracking of results. I love seeing the rapid progress that this kind of tutoring entails, even for people who have tried and failed with other methods.

My second area is English as a Second Language. In addition to my Master's in Education, with a specialty in Reading, I have a Certificate in Teaching ESL from American University in Washington, DC. I've taught ESL in universities and private school settings in Colorado, Washington, and New Jersey; I've also conducted teacher training for English teachers for the US Department of State in Romania. I am very comfortable teaching English grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation to learners of all ages. Both of my children are originally from China and are now fluent in English.

My experience has shown that real progress is only possible through commitment and frequent exposure to new learning. With LD (Learning Disabled) individuals, this means two tutoring sessions a week of an hour each. With motivated ESL learners, one session of 60 to 90 minutes may be sufficient.

I have worked in the field of ESL for over 30 years. I have a Master's in Education from Johns Hopkins University with a Specialty in Reading, and a Certificate in Teaching ESL from American University, Washington, DC. I also have extensive training in working with learning disabled individuals as an Academic Therapist through TRI-Services Center of Chevy Chase, Maryland and on a private basis. I am an active member of Successfully speak Up Toastmasters and have won many speaking contests at the local and district level of Toastmasters International.

I have had training through TRI-Services Center and several years of related experience, using Orton-Gillingham methods.

I look forward to meeting you or your children! Learning can be enjoyable, when you see progress. We'll work together closely to meet that goal!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a former college English teacher.

Phonics

I completed extensive training to be an Academic Therapist at TRI-Services Center of Chevy Chase, Maryland, from 1984-1990. I have also done private tutoring of learning disabled children and adults since moving to Princeton, NJ. I continue to keep related materials using the Orton Gillingham approach including workbooks from the Scottish Rite Temples and readers of all levels, including multisensory reading materials.

Public Speaking

I have been an active member of Princeton's Successfully Speak Up Toastmasters club for 11 years and have held all officers. I have mentored four different members to give speeches. I have also won speech contests and table topics contests at the local and district level. I can provide references.
