Greetings students and parents/guardians! I am Darlene. I currently am a substitute teacher, and have been a teaching assistant and tutor for 7 plus years, focusing mainly on Language Arts - reading, writing, vocabulary, but am also able to assist students with basic math concepts and study/organizational skills. I love all aspects of Language Arts! Reading allows one to gain knowledge or escape to a far away place or learn about someone else's life or what ingredients are needed to make a delicious meal and writing allows one to convey their thoughts and opinions on paper (more like email & text!) while vocabulary allows the articulation of those thoughts in a precise manner or not (that's where I help - organization and flow of thoughts) - the possibilities are endless!
I believe learning should be fun and I do my best to fulfill this belief. For example, I tutored a child who was a baseball fanatic, so I designed lessons around this passion with writing prompts and vocabulary that included baseball facts. And there are plenty of books on baseball - fiction, non-fiction, biographies, auto-biographies, so we were never at a loss for interesting reading material! Of course we also worked on school curriculum material, though interest waned ever so slightly as the subject matter was not baseball. However, it is my job to teach strategies for achieving success when the subject matter doesn't interest the student and I did.
Every child is unique as is their brain, which it why I enjoy tutoring so very much. Their success is a puzzle and as a tutor, it is my duty to figure out which piece needs tweaking so it will fit with the others and when it does - VOILA! The result is one outstanding student! After the first tutoring session, I will present an individualized learning plan which will address strengths and weaknesses, objectives and goals and discuss with the student to see if they agree/disagree with my assessment of their skills. Once we have clear cut goals, we will work to achieve them and celebrate when we do! Thanks for taking the time to read my profile. I look forward to meeting and working with you. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
