Hi, I’m John, and I am a graduate student at Rutgers University pursuing my MA in Classical Studies. I have graduated magna cum laude from Villanova with a BA in History and Classics. In my time as an undergrad, I gained immense experience as a researcher, as a writer, as a linguist, and most importantly, as a student. Being a student is hard work, attempting to learn new skills such as how to write a research paper and learn a new language while balancing numerous classes, extracurricular activities, and friendships.

Classes have not always come easy to me. Latin and Greek, in particular, have required twice as much work as the average class. I know what it is like to struggle in a class, and how to turn it around and succeed as a student. At Villanova, I succeeded as a double major while serving on the executive board of my theatre group for more than two years as the Technical Director.

Every student learns differently, but no student learns when the material does not excite them. My number one goal as a tutor is not to force a student to regurgitate material or memorize formulas, but to help them find their passion within the material so that they want to learn, as a passionate student will soar farther than they ever thought they could.

I specialize in Latin, History, and Writing, and can help you in Government and English as well.

Theater

I served as the Technical Director in my undergraduate theatre group for two, supervising the lighting design, set design, and set construction of six musicals. During that time, I oversaw upkeep and maintenance in the theatre and workshop spaces, and designed, budgeted, and led the construction of $1000 sets for shows that were directed, produced, and perform entirely by undergraduate students. This experience has taught me much about how to organize all aspects of plays, including musicals and non-musicals, and I have served as a resource for students at both my high school and undergraduate institutions. Furthermore, I worked as a stage manager during one summer for The Hudson Warehouse off-Broadway outdoor theatre group. Beyond my technical experience, I have taken classes on stage combat, dance, and playwriting, and wrote a one-act that got performed on a college campus.

Corporate Training

Greek,

Greek

After graduating with a BA in Classics from Villanova University, I have taken the equivalent of two years' worth of Ancient Greek split between the University of Pennsylvania and Hunter College. I have experience with multiple styles of Greek, including Homeric, Classical Attic, and Imperial. Currently, I am continuing my Greek studies while getting my Masters at Rutgers University.
Latin,

Latin

I graduated from Villanova with a Bachelor's Degree in Classics, and am currently working on my Master's at Rutgers University. Now in my ninth year of studying Latin and second year as a Latin tutor, I have experience with a wide variety of textbooks, Latin authors, and teaching styles, including both traditional Latin textbooks (e.g., Wheelock's Latin, Ecce Romani) and modern "spoken Latin" courses. This breadth of experience allows me to help students not only understand the grammar, but to engage with and bring to life the ancient Mediterranean world and truly capture the beauty of the Latin language.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Over the course of my college career, I wrote numerous research papers of varying lengths (ranging from 10-77 pages), several news article and journalism pieces, and a short play. The completion of these projects require an acute attention to detail needed to take a final look over a paper.

History

American History,

American History

No History B.A. in the United States can be complete without an extensive background in the development of American history. In addition to taking a survey course on American history in college, I also took courses on the American Civil War and Music History in the 20th century. When in high school, I took the AP exam, scoring a 5. When analyzing American history, I pay particular attention to how trends in the United States developed alongside each other and interacted with developments overseas.
Classics,

Classics

I graduated from Villanova with a Bachelor's Degree in History and Classics. I am currently working on my Master's in Classics at Rutgers University, with a focus on Ancient History. I have more than eight years of Latin experience and more than two years of ancient Greek, and have taken courses on Hellenic civilization, the Roman imperial period, ancient Egypt, archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean and Mesopotamia, and a seminar of Sparta with one of the world's leading experts. Additionally, I completed three Classics-themed senior capstone projects in my undergrad, including a paper on Classical reception in Game of Thrones, the application of social movement theory to the Late Roman Republic, and an honors thesis on the transformation of the Roman Imperial office during the Crisis of the Third Century.
European History,

European History

As part of my History B.A., I took numerous courses on European History, ranging from medieval Britain and Ireland to European expansion over the 18th century. When working on European history with students, I promote interdisciplinary analyses of the period with a special emphasis on primary source analysis.
Government & Politics

Government & Politics

Much of the work that I have done as a historian has involved analysis of government; during my college years, I wrote papers on the politics of Revolutionary New York, the effect of term limits on American politics, and the breakdown of the Roman Republic, among others. Additionally, I have read the works of numerous Political Philosophers, including Plato, Machiavelli, Locke, and Hobbes.

Archaeology

As part of my Classics (Ancient Mediterranean) studies at both the graduate and undergraduate level, I have had extensive exposure to the archaeology of ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. My training as a historian allows me to help students discuss the archaeological record in its proper historical context and to connect the archaeological record with historical and literary evidence. When possible, I like to incorporate comparative archaeology into discussions with students, to help bring their understanding and analysis to another level.
