Elementary and Special Education Teacher who is trained in Foundational Reading Instruction, Reading Comprehension and Writing. I am very goal oriented and continually learning new strategies to enable the students with a variety of needs whom I have tutored. I utilize a variety of multi-sensory approaches and research based Orton-Gillingham programs which tap the different intelligences of students to retain skills. I am particularly interested in helping K-2 students with Dyslexia and other challenges who have experienced a lot of frustration raise their Reading fluency and comprehension levels. I have NJ Certification in Elementary (K-6) and Students with Disabilities. In addition, I work with students to improve working memory and processing speed for academic success. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught 5th grade for 2 years in an inclusion classroom, 4th grade for 1 year, and 1st grade for 2 years. I taught all of the subjects--Reading, Writing, Math and Science.

Hebrew

I would like to be listed as a Hebrew tutor. I took 1 year of college Hebrew, then followed it up with three years of intensive Jewish studies in Hebrew. This past summer, I passed the Level IV Ulpan at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. This level is the completion of the grammar proficiency. I speak every day in Hebrew and can converse easily.

Religion

I have studied Judaic studies for the past 25 years, and have run a small Congregational School for the past three years. My expertise includes teaching Bible, Hebrew, Jewish values, rituals, Holidays, and other Judaic subjects to Jews.

Special Needs

I am a NJ State Certified Special Education Teacher. I have taught 1st, 4th and 5th grade students with a range of disabilities in inclusion, and self-contained classrooms. I utilize Orton-Gillingham, Grapho-Phonics, Spalding, and Reading/Writing Workshop methodologies in instruction.

Great Tutor

Alan is very attentive and has great strategy for building reading comprehension. He has only had 2 lessons with my son but I already see improvement in his confidence. My son looks forward to the sessions now. Very grateful that I found him.
