About Emily

I graduated from University of Dayton in 2010 with my Early Childhood Education degree (3 years to 3rd grade) and special needs endorsement. I have had experience tutoring fourth graders and a boy going into first grade.

I have tutored in both math and reading. I student taught in a third grade inclusion classroom. I have had experience in all grade levels up to third. For four years, I taught preschool special needs, working with students with mild-severe needs and typically developing students. I also taught Kindergarten for a year, my class included students with behavior needs as well as typically developing students. I am currently teaching students with autism.

I enjoy individualizing lessons to meet the needs of each child; making sure the lessons are engaging and challenging but not reaching a level of frustration. It is important that the child is constantly encountering success. I demonstrate strength in my positivity and patience. Positive reinforcement and encouragement can constantly be heard during lessons.

Math can be a frustrating and overwhelming subject for students children as the concepts continue to build on one another. With plenty of repetition and practice children begin to learn those concepts. The important thing is to keep it fun and engaging; I will bring a lot of games and activities to lessons.

Reading is one of my favorite things to teach. Helping kids learn to read and learn to love reading is wonderful. Children are able to see their own improvements as they begin to become stronger readers.

With a degree in Early Childhood Education I have had over 10 years' experience working with children in the classroom and outside.

Phonics is another one of my favorite things to teach! There are so many ways to make phonic fun, engaging, and interactive; all of which are important in making it "stick" with young learners.

I work full time so tutoring lessons would have to be kept to the evenings and weekends.

I look forward to working with you and your child and helping them to love learning and be successful.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I graduated in 2010 from the University of Dayton with a license in Early Childhood Education (preK-3rd grade) and my PreKindergarten Special Needs Endorsement. I am a licensed teacher and taught a preschool special needs class for 4 years and Kindergarten for 1 year. In those five years I worked with children with a variety of disabilities, including but not limited to, autism, ADD/ADHD, aspergers, PDD-NOS, behavioral diagnoses, downs syndrome, cerebral palsy.

Elementary (K-6th)

I graduated in 2010 from the University of Dayton with a license in Early Childhood Education (preK-3rd grade) and my PreKindergarten Special Needs Endorsement. I am a licensed teacher and taught a preschool special needs class for 4 years and Kindergarten for 1 year.

Handwriting

While teaching preschool and Kindergarten we worked on proper letter formation, how to correctly write each letter. In Kindergarten the focus was not only on how to form the letters, but how to write them correctly on lines and then making them legible. This was not done only with pencil and paper, but with a variety of materials and in fun and engaging ways.

Phonics

Having a strong phonics foundation is essential for beginning readers and writers. Phonics instruction was a huge part of my Kindergarten curriculum as I was teaching my students to read and write. We worked on it daily, teaching new skills and reviewing old. I included it in a variety of fun games and activities, to keep it fun and engaging, as it is so important and can never be practiced enough!

Special Needs

I graduated in 2010 from the University of Dayton with a license in Early Childhood Education (preK-3rd grade) and my PreKindergarten Special Needs Endorsement. I am a licensed teacher and taught a preschool special needs class for 4 years and Kindergarten for 1 year.

Study Skills

As a Kindergarten teacher I taught the students not only the core curriculum, but how to learn; which is an important life skill to learn at an early age. In preschool one of the focuses was "how to be in school". Which focuses on the skills that are important for students to be successful in a school setting.
