About Susan

Hello there!

My name is Susan. I'm a recent grad from Rutgers, New Brunswick, where I got my Bachelor's in English. I've been tutoring since I was in high school, and I honestly just really love getting to help people do well. I got into tutoring when one of my English teachers approached me and asked me to help some of the students in my class who were struggling with their essay assignments. At first I was really unsure; I hadn't ever tutored someone before, and I didn't know what to do. Luckily, I had a really great teacher helping me out at first and I quickly fell into the groove of things.

My personal approach to tutoring is centered around asking questions and making things engaging, maybe even fun! Just handing a student answers won't teach them anything, so I like to ask leading questions. For example, if you have an assignment on the symbolism in Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death", I would ask you something like "what images keep popping up?", "why do you think Poe chose to set this story during a masquerade?", or "do you think that color has any symbolic meaning here?" as opposed to just pointing out the continually changing colors of the rooms, the symbolism of masks, or the importance of the clock's chiming. I like to help students find connections between things; I don't believe that there is necessarily one right answer in interpreting literature. Of course, when it comes to things like grammar, spelling, and essay writing, one would have to adhere to the rules of the language and the guidelines set out by your teacher. In those cases, I try to help you understand why things are written in a certain way, and not just that they are. Knowing the rules is only half the battle!

A lot of my tutoring approach was actually formed through my own experiences in receiving tutoring, not giving it. I have never been the best at math; I find it to be complicated and frustrating. I have had a math tutor since I was in the sixth grade, and needed one all the way through college. I found that the best tutors I had were the ones that pointed me in the right direction and helped me to figure it out instead of just saying "no, this is wrong" or correcting my work without giving me any insight into where I went wrong.

There was always something really satisfying about finally grasping something I have a hard time with, and I want to help you get that same feel good sensation with English. I've studied a huge variety of subjects within English, from Gothic literature to modern day poetry, and I think that my background has really prepared me to help others succeed. I've always been involved in creative writing, theater, and music, so I'm willing to get creative in order to help you learn in whatever way works best for you, and I'm a bit goofy so I'll try my best to make it fun too; learning is always a little easier when you don't have to focus on not falling asleep!

Hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
