About Richard

I was born and raised in northern New Jersey. I attended college at Rutgers University, where I majored in chemistry.
I then went on to Northwestern Univ. in Evanston, Il. Not only did I get a PhD in organic chemistry, but I met my wife there. I worked in the chemical industry for 20 years.
I became a teacher via the alternate route and went on to teach chemistry from the physical science level to the AP level. due to medical problems, I was forced to retire. However, I have been doing home bound istruction for the last 15 years. I have a wide range of demos to help make the material interesting.

As I was born BC (before computers and before calculators) I am very good with numbers. I feel it is very important to understand what you are doing so that you can apply it to new situations. This is very important in both math and science. Besides teaching you the material, I show you that it is relevant in many situations. I also bring in math "majic" to liven up the experience.

I have a PhD in organic chemistry and have taught chemistry at many levels. I also have a wide range f experiments to keep the material interesting. As I have worked in the chemical industry I can explain what a chemist actually does. This helps bring the material to life.

Just so you don't think I'm a science and math geek, I do have other interests. I enjoy live theater and music (a wide range). I played soccer in high school and was in the jazz band. My daughter was in several movies and as a result have met numerous well known actors. But I must admit, I do enjoy both science and math and hope to share this with you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
