About Tom

Hello to my prospective fellow learners!

I have been tutoring high-school-aged and above students for nearly 10 years in English (editing, grammar/punctuation, writing, vocabulary), German (among other languages), and test preparation. My main strengths are my patience, my ability to identify obstructions to learning, and my capacity for clarifying complex problems and making them more digestible. I am often told that I am friendly, considerate, and focused. I don't like to pry when it comes to my students' personal lives and tend to avoid small talk in order to remain professional, but I know that this can also sometimes make students feel more at ease. That being the case, I encourage you to be forthcoming about your preferences! I am told that I carry on conversations quite well.

Though I taught in Europe with a novel methodology, I try to adapt to my students" learning style as much as possible. I most strongly adhere to the "hear it, say it, read it, write it" philosophy. Every student has a slightly different goal; some want to learn German to impress a boyfriend or girlfriend, some want to pass a test or course, and some even want to transplant to Germany! It is this kind of diversity that keeps teaching languages so interesting for me and I think that my enthusiasm for them shines through.

I am willing to travel to students (minimum 2-hour time commitment) and make it a personal goal to promptly answer emails. I have lived in Europe in both France and Germany and taught and tutored both at the college level. I also use both languages daily at my day job. I scored in the 99th percentile in the verbal sections of the SAT and GRE and have an extensive knowledge of etymologies, which allows me to make dreaded "big words" into something comprehensible by breaking them down for students. I make English less intimidating for native speakers and ESL students alike. I am available on evenings and weekends and sometimes have Friday afternoons available, as well.

If you have further questions or concerns, please send me an email at your leisure!
I can't wait to meet you and start moving toward whatever your goals may be!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
