I am a certified special education teacher with over 4 years of tutoring experience. I have worked with both special needs students (supplementing language and social skills lessons in conjunction with students' classroom teachers) and students in regular placement providing homework help for all subjects from elementary to middle school. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I graduated with a bachelors in special education and have worked with students with a broad range of learning disabilities as a teacher and tutor for almost 9 years. Most recently, I have worked one on one with students with ADD/ADHD to teach strategies of executive function, planning, and organization. I've worked with students with ADD at the elementary and middle school level.

Algebra 1

I have been a teacher of algebra 1, algebra 2, and geometry for 3 years.

Autism

I graduated with a Bachelors in Special Education and worked as paraprofessional at a center for students with autism for 3 years. During this time, I received training in ABA and the Verbal Behavior Model and also substituted as the classroom teacher as needed throughout the building. In addition, I taught special ed as the classroom teacher for an additional 6 years. One of the settings was a classroom of 8 students with autism, ranging in age from 7 to 13. I utilized a team approach to create individualized goals including self-help, language, social, academic, and when applicable, inclusion in the mainstream setting. I worked closely with the behavioral analyst to assess and carry out behavior plans, and trained and supervised 7 paraprofessionals. I have also had experience using the VB-MAPP to assess new students' overall skill levels across all domains.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught special education for about 10 years both in school settings and at a specialized learning center working one on one with students providing supplementary support. I have also taught students who attend our learning center full time in lieu of school as the traditional setting may not have been successful for their unique needs. I have worked with students at the elementary to high school level and created individualized curriculum for students through IEPs and development of a program at the learning center, and feel confident in teaching to the 6th grade level.

Reading

My approach towards teaching reading includes: fluency, decoding, phonics, sight word recognition, strategies for dyslexia, active reading, comprehension, and increasing working memory while reading.

Special Needs

I have taught special education in the classroom setting for about 9 years, working with students ranging from severe disabilities such as students with limited motor skills due to cerebral palsy to students with learning difficulties functioning on grade level. I graduated with a Bachelors in Special Education and have also tutored students with autism providing language, social, and academic skills as well as students with dyslexia in reading and writing. As a teacher, I was fortunate to have the experience of using several different programs for phonics, language, reading, writing, and math. I've also worked with parents and used a collaborative team approach to create individualized education plans for students who require non-traditional academics. I am trained in ABA and the verbal behavior model.

Study Skills

I graduated with a bachelors in special education and have taught and tutored for the past 9 years, working with students with a broad range of abilities. I have worked one on one long term to build executive function, organization, and planning skills for students who demonstrate a need in developing better study habits. I have also worked with students to teach study skills of note-taking, creating flashcards, and test-taking strategies.
