In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I graduated with a Bachelors in Special Education and worked as paraprofessional at a center for students with autism for 3 years. During this time, I received training in ABA and the Verbal Behavior Model and also substituted as the classroom teacher as needed throughout the building. In addition, I taught special ed as the classroom teacher for an additional 6 years. One of the settings was a classroom of 8 students with autism, ranging in age from 7 to 13. I utilized a team approach to create individualized goals including self-help, language, social, academic, and when applicable, inclusion in the mainstream setting. I worked closely with the behavioral analyst to assess and carry out behavior plans, and trained and supervised 7 paraprofessionals. I have also had experience using the VB-MAPP to assess new students' overall skill levels across all domains.

I have worked with students at the elementary to high school level and created individualized curriculum for students through IEPs and development of a program at the learning center, and feel confident in teaching to the 6th grade level.
