About Frank

I have a BA in Music from Rutgers with a K-12 certification.
I was a classical guitar performance major.
I taught Special Ed music for 3 years and K-12 music for 1 year before I started my corporate career.
I have been working at a corporate IT job and am retiring in January and looking for a teaching job.

I have maintained a teaching schedule with both adults and kids. I customize the lessons according to each students needs.

I can teach guitar, bass, and Ukulele as well as beginner strings especially upright bass.
I have experience teaching and playing acoustic and electric guitar. I can teach Jazz, Rock and Classical.
As a longtime vocal student I can help my students develop their musicianship by coaching them to become better singers. I also teach music theory and improvisation as well as songwriting.

I managed a music store in Summit NJ for 4 years and have have experience as a guitar repairman doing setups and repairs and am currently an apprentice with a guitar builder in West Orange NJ.

I have developed two courses that I teach at weekend music festivals. One is “How to improvise in 3 easy notes” and the other is a course I call “Guitar Yoga”. Guitar Yoga is both a course and a teaching methodology that I have developed over the years which combines my music teaching experience with my yoga studies. I've had 40 years of experience working with all kinds of students at all ages. I have learned a lot about what works and what doesn't work when teaching guitar or any instrument. I am able to quickly assess a students learning style and adapt my teaching methods to get the best results.

I feel that the best way to learn to play guitar is to work with the music you like the best. So pick a song you like and we will get started.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I have a BA in music from Rutgers which included 2 years of ear training courses. I always include ear training exercises in all the lessons I teach. I work with a partner to continually develop my ear. On most gigs I have to rely on my ear to get me through the tunes I don't know.

General Music

I have a BA in music from Rutgers which included 2 years of music history courses as well as ear training.
music history, music theory and performance.

I have always been a student of music history and continue to study by reading about it every chance I get. I have a K-12 teaching certification.

Guitar

I have a BA from Rutgers in classical guitar. I've studied and played Jazz guitar for over 30 years. I continue to study with a master teacher and continually improve my teaching methods. Recently I have developed 2 workshops for my students. One is called "Guitar Yoga" which teaches students how to practice effectively.

The other course is an intro to improvisation called "How to improvise in 3 easy notes".

Music Theory

Understanding Music theory is an important part of becoming a complete musician. I always include a musical analysis with every lesson.

Songwriting

I have attended 2 songwriting workshops in the last 2 years to help improve my skills as a songwriter. I also work with a private coach to help refine my songs.

Hard to imagine a better teacher

Frank is a remarkably patient and thorough guitar teacher who provides real hands-on advice. His approach is holistic, embracing not only technique but posture, breathing, and even yoga exercises that help insure good fundamentals. He clearly spent time thinking ahead of our first lesson to come up with a customized approach for my personal needs. I can't recommend him highly enough and look forwa
