About Jacob

Hello! My name is Jacob and I'm told I'm a bit over-enthusiastic when it comes to mathematics. From algebra to calculus to topology, there's something to love about every course and I'd be delighted to help you find it.

I've been tutoring since high school, when I volunteered in the library to help my classmates with their algebra and calculus after classes. Since then, I've gone on to receive a B.Sc. in Mathematics from Hofstra University, tutoring through all four years! I actually entered college as a chemistry major, but I found my required courses in multivariable and vector calculus far more engaging, so I ended up pursuing mathematics instead. Thanks to my studies (and my boundless enthusiasm for the subject), none of my friends were ever short a tutor when they needed one, regardless of what math course they were taking.

My philosophy when it comes to teaching mathematics is that the only way to get anyone to learn anything is to get them curious. Curiosity leads to discovery, and discovery leads to excitement and a sense of accomplishment that pushes you even further. As I said previously, there's something to love about every branch of mathematics, and I'm certain that you'll agree if you give it a chance.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I have been tutoring calculus for longer than any other subject. I began in Junior year of high school, working as a volunteer tutor in my school's library after school hours, and I've recently begun doing so professionally. My students have generally received A's (or at the very least B's) in their calculus courses after I've tutored them despite substandard comprehension at the beginning in some cases. Out of every subject on here that I have applied to tutor within, calculus is, without a doubt, the one I am most qualified for.

Linear Algebra

I received an A in a very rigorous course on Linear Algebra. I am also highly familiar with the various theorems and rules regarding abstract algebra. I can speak in an informed manner on the rules of matrix algebra, homomorphisms, kernals, images, and the representation and solution of systems of equations through matrix algebra. I find linear algebra fascinating and would love to spread that fascination.

Logic

When it comes to higher mathematics in a college setting, a firm grasp of the rules of mathematical logic is not only encouraged, but required. I have taken courses on logic before, and am fully ready to explain the process behind various proof structures. Logic is naturally a passion of any mathematics student, and you will find no exception in me.
