I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish, and a minor in International Business. I also went on to receive my Master’s in Spanish language and grammar after working in private business for several years. My favorite classes were taught by teachers who were passionate about their subjects, demanding of their students, and rigorous in their evaluation of my performance. I found that I learned the most from the teachers and professors who valued preparation, in-class performance, and test results—these types of teachers not only helped me excel academically, they also cultivated a strong work ethic that benefitted me in business and throughout my life.

My tutoring approach is modeled on the methods of my best teachers, professors, and mentors. Preparation, practice, and effort are key to achieving results. I will always make it my priority to ensure that my students are given the necessary tools to excel in their subject matter. Whether it is building a basic foundation of Spanish vocabulary and grammar, or preparing students for Spanish Advanced Placement testing, I will ensure that the shared goals of the student and parents are clearly identified, factored into our lesson plans, and considered in all evaluations.

I currently teach audio/visual translation as an adjunct professor at Montclair State University, I have taught ESL, and have lived in several Spanish-speaking countries. I also have children who have studied Spanish over several years in our local school district, and am familiar with how extra tutoring in Spanish reading, writing, and oral proficiency can be of tremendous value as students advance, and when the time comes for AP testing.

For older students considering a career in language, I can offer my insight and experience having worked for several international communications companies, in addition to owning my own language services agency. Translation, editing, proofreading, and Microsoft Office and Adobe desktop publishing application skills are additional areas I can help students master.

Since every student is different with his/her unique learning style, I welcome any input and feedback from students and parents. I am always available to discuss students’ and parents’ questions, remain easily accessible, and will work diligently to help students and parents achieve their goals.

Whether you are a student interested in improving your Spanish language skills, or a parent hoping to help your child improve reading, writing, and oral proficiency, your success is my mission. Please do not hesitate to get in touch. And, if you are considering a career in translation or language services, I can help you develop the skills employers look for when considering new hires or contracting freelance work.

Adobe Illustrator,

Adobe Illustrator

I have worked extensively with Adobe Illustrator in a publishing/advertising environment. Many of my translation clients send documents that require translation of content and manipulation of graphics in Illustrator. I am comfortable working in this application for my business needs, as well as explaining how to utilize the application for students/business professionals seeking to enhance their skills. I am a strong proponent of teaching the fundamentals of the application through hands-on practice.
Adobe InDesign

Adobe InDesign

I have worked in the language services industry for many years, first utilizing Quark, and then Adobe InDesign when it because the de facto app for desktop publishing and document design. I have worked with Adobe InDesign to produce foreign-language versions of documents. Many documents have required a solid working knowledge of the application, including organizing pages, manipulating images, creating and editing master pages, creating PDFs from the application, etc. The majority of clients I have served utilize Adobe InDesign, these days CC (2017) for their publishing needs, so I have invested in a CC license and continue to work in the application for mostly advertising and healthcare clients.

Business

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

I have worked in Microsoft Word for most of my professional life. As a project manager working for international communications companies, I was responsible for learning the application, inside and out, in order to efficiently manage translation projects. Over the years, as the application has evolved, I have stayed abreast of updates and changes to functionality. As an adjunct professor at MSU, in addition to teaching audiovisual translation and project management, I have to teach my students the basics of MS Word in order for them to complete their assignments.

Corporate Training

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I have studied multiple languages throughout my life, including English, Latin, Hebrew, Spanish, Japanese, and limited French and Italian. I grew up in a bilingual English-Italian household, and my mother was an English professor and ESL teacher. I have had extensive exposure to foreign language speakers throughout my life, and am patient with the learning process (I understand what it feels like to be a learner of a new language). I taught ESL to Japanese businessmen working on the first iterations of GPS at Navtech back in the late 80's. I also taught ESL to Spanish speakers in Spain while obtaining my Master's degree in Spanish at Middlebury College. As an adjunct professor at MSU, I am comfortable in a teaching environment. In fact, many of my students speak Spanish as a first language, and English second, so teaching complex subject matter requires patience and consideration of their different learning styles and challenges.

Spanish

Spanish

All of my life, I have been surrounded by Spanish-speakers. I grew up in California, where many people speak Spanish, and I lived in Spain, both as an undergraduate and graduate student. When I finished graduate school, I lived and worked in Puerto Rico and New Mexico, where I was required to conduct interviews and lead research using my Spanish language skills. I have studied Spanish extensively, starting in high school, continuing for a BA in Spanish at Santa Clara University, and then a Master's in Spanish language and grammar at Middlebury College. I read, write, and speak Spanish on a daily basis for work, as well as communicate with many peers and colleagues in Spanish. In many ways, because I grew up speaking English first, then learning Spanish language and grammar second, I have an exceptionally strong command of grammar rules. I spend a good amount of time editing and proofreading Spanish translation for my business. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience in Spanish language and culture, and welcome the opportunity to help new students of Spanish gain a better understanding and level of confidence navigating the language.

Oksana, 14 lessons with Jason

Patient and informative tutor

Jason has been my Spanish Tutor for nearly a month now and I really appreciate him. I take an online Spanish class, but Jason is very hands on. He not only goes over what is on the computer screen but also gives real life examples. When Jason and I have our sessions it feels like I am in a classroom, rather than in a tutor session. We cover everything from the alphabet to conjugations.

Fenny, 8 lessons with Jason

Very kind, punctual, knowledgeable tutor

Jason has well-prepared me for the upcoming DELE exam, and I feel confident and ready to take it. He has always been flexible with his schedules, had good communication, and taught in a very easy to understand, yet informative manner. I appreciate his professionalism and look forward to continuing to work with him.

Jay, 2 lessons with Jason

Knowledgeable and engaging

Really helps with nuances of English language. Caters to student interests. Gives homework that is meaningful. Really knows how to work on pronunciation. My son-in-law's English has been improving noticeably even within the last few weeks.

Elizabeth, 7 lessons with Jason

Knowledgeable and adaptable

In my first Spanish lesson with Jason, I quickly outlined my goals for re-learning Spanish over the summer, and he used my goals to craft the rest of the lesson, which included grammatical exercises, conversation, conjugation, and reading. To be able to reconnect with all of these skills in just one session - one hour - was truly fantastic, and I look forward to more sessions this summer.
