About Lynda

Hello, prospective student! I am a Math and Physics teacher with over 10 years of experience spanning classroom teaching, private tutoring, and Gifted and Talented programs. I presently tutor over 35 hours a week in Math, Science, and test prep (ACT, SAT, and ISEE). I have a Master’s in Physics Education from the University of Virginia, with an additional 15 graduate credits in Mathematics, holding dual teaching certification in both Math and Physics. I make myself available to my students, answering frantic text messages at 11pm, and occasionally meeting as early as 4:45am (during Finals week, don't ask...)!

I specialize in demystifying challenging math and physics concepts by (1) explaining concepts as clearly as possible, (2) performing examples in order to model the problem-solving process, and (3) providing several practice problems to work up to mastery. While I am a professional, I enjoy conversing in a casual tone (think more Penny, less Sheldon), as math and science are often culprits for producing anxiety in students. Whether you are aiming for that 800 on the Math SAT, or simply trying to make it through your physics course unscathed, please feel free to reach out to me and let me help you in attaining your goal!

If you'd like to try an online lesson, I meet students via Facetime or Skype (video optional!) and send a link via email to my online Interactive Whiteboard so you can see everything I write in real time. If you have worksheets, textbook pages, you can take a quick pic with your phone and text them to me. Usually, people who try online with me never want to see me in the flesh again! =)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I've been tutoring ACT Math and Science for 7 years, and am passionate about helping students ace this exam and get into the college of their choice. Many students preparing for this exam are currently in Algebra II or the beginning of Precalc and haven't been exposed to logarithms or trig yet, so I specialize in giving a crash course of that content as well as strategies to excel on the test itself!

Algebra 1

I am a NJ Certified Teacher of mathematics with experience in teaching public schools, several years of tutoring, and teaching an algebra I course through Montclair State's Center for Gifted and Talented.

GED

I have a Master's in Physics Education from University of Virginia, with certification in Math and Physics. I have helped others pass the GED over the past year!

ISEE

I have spent the past four years tutoring extensively for the ISEE and SSAT. I am passionate about sharing tips and tricks that make difficult problems turn into simple ones, and get a lot of satisfaction when I see a student's confidence skyrocket once they realize that a perfect score is totally within the realm of possibility!

Physics

I am a NJ Certified Teacher of Physics, with a Master's in Physics Education from the University of Virginia, and an internship at Princeton Plasma Physics Lab.

Praxis

I have tutored for the Praxis I exam for the last few years, taking great pride in receiving the text that says "I got into the teaching program!" Having been a teacher for several years myself, I have experience passing the following Praxis Exams: Elementary Education, Praxis I, Mathematics Content Knowledge, Physics Content Knowledge, Middle School Science, General Science Content Knowledge, and Earth/Space Science.

SAT Math

I have been tutoring SAT Math since 2006, and am adept at teaching strategies, tricks, and time-saving tips for problem-solving as well as reviewing content in a condensed/easily comprehensible form. I have passion for SAT and ACT test prep, and truly feel satisfaction when a student surpasses their "dream" score. One of my students had a 680 with the goal of breaking 700; she ended up with a perfect 800 just 12 weeks later!
