Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to tutor in this specific subject area because I have taught at Essex County College Youth program in Newark, New Jersey specializing in grades k-6. I particularly taught 5th and 6th grade Language Arts and Math. In Language Arts students worked on reading fluency and comprehension. Students read complex text and worked on strategies that can help them better understand a story. For example, using graphic organizers, taking notes, asking questions and understanding the author's purpose. Once students understand that reading is more than just reading words, they will improve drastically. Reading involves metacognition, before reading, they might clarify their purpose for reading and preview the text. During reading, they might monitor their understanding, adjusting their reading speed to fit the difficulty of the text and "fixing" any comprehension problems they have. After reading, they check their understanding of what they read. Once students under this they are on their way to becoming great at reading. I have over ten years of experience tutoring students at the elementary level. Another reason why I am well qualified is because I have obtained an M.A. in education. Some of the courses were geared towards curriculum and instruction. As well as reading instruction, making the transition to a balanced perspective.

Handwriting

I am qualified to tutor in this specific subject area because I have taught at Essex County College Youth program in Newark, New Jersey specializing in grades k-6. I am currently a third grade teacher. I teach handwriting and writing skills to students in grades first thru third. I attended Kean University where I studied education. Handwriting should focus on the three components of handwriting; letter formation (form and slant), size, and spacing. When teaching handwriting, tutors should focus on one component at a time -- first, letter formation; then, size; and then, spacing. While in school I studied Getty-Dubay handwriting series and implemented it with my students. It has proved to be a highly effective approach to teaching young children handwriting.

Reading

My experience is quite extensive. It all started with teaching pre-school for three years and then kindergarten. I studied how children learn in various ways. Once understanding how they learn, I had to create a curriculum that focused on phonics, word study, and . repetition which is crucial in getting children on the road to becoming strong readers. I have a Masters degree in Early Childhood Education which allowed me to study in depth how young children learn. I've had the opportunity to work for Huntington Learning Center for a few years and learned strategies that I believe will help children excel. I also have nieces and nephews who I've had the pleasure of helping. I must say that each one of them are honor roll students! Currently I am working with two third grade students who struggle with reading comprehension. Over time they have seen an increase in their reading abilities with much practice, practice, and more practicing.
